Reviews: Fine (13)
“Informative and beautiful”
(Paperback)
by Korie at Wimbledon
This comic has come at the perfect moment when more people are openly exploring their identity and gender. It has beautifully captured interviews with snippets from the authors own life to explore humanity and gender from all perspectives. It will be something I certainly reccomend and is up there with award winners like Gender Queer. I encourage anyone to read this if you want to understand more about the subject whoever you are and whoever you want to be. Absolutely beautiful
“A gorgeous exploration of identity and gender!”
(Paperback)
by Erin at Belfast
One of my favourite reads this year, Fine is a beautiful collection of experiences on gender, self-expression, race, culture, and all the little things in between that influence how we interpret identity and ourselves. I’m delighted to say this was my first foray into non-fiction graphic novels, the combination of personal experiences alongside some honestly stunning artwork made this incredibly informative but also emotional. I adored how Rhea interwove their own journey throughout the novel, allowing us to see how conducting their research into gender impacted on their own life both as a researcher and as a human just trying to find themselves. I cried, I laughed, (some parts I had to Google for more information), and overall I just wanted to shout from the rooftops that everyone should read this with an open mind and an open heart. Rhea has made something incredibly special with this.
“Emotional and informative”
(Paperback)
by Molly at Nuneaton
A really interesting dive into Rhea’s own journey with gender but also the way we interpret gender as individuals and how our language has evolved over the years and how it varies within communities and cultures. Emotional and informative – I really enjoyed the discussions raised during the interviews and seeing how this reflected on Rhea’s life in the process. Highly recommend!
“Well-researched, raw and captivating exploration of gender!”
(Paperback)
by Helen Dipietro
Non-fiction graphic novel exploring gender. This was really interesting and felt well-researched and raw. I loved the artwork; the characters convey so much emotion! I love a reflective read and the style of this graphic novel was captivating!
“Thank You Rhea Ewing For This Gem.”
(Paperback)
by Carys W.
My favourite read of this year so far, FINE is three hundred beautifully illustrated pages filled with emotion, pain and stunning joy. This book has import not just for those predisposed to reading about gender and everything that goes with it, but for those just starting to discover the variety of life. For me, personally, it was heart achingly meaningful to see some of my own experiences laid out on paper and to explore the lives of others similar to me. I have actually lent my copy to friends and family, and while I had a very personal experience of FINE, my mother found it illuminated a world she had never considered in great detail. We could now discuss my experience of life and it made more sense to her because of this book.I particularly appreciated the insight into Ewing's journey as they realised they need to be a part of the narrative themselves, not just a passive collator of other's stories.FINE is powerful and should be on everyone's reading list and especially in every school library.
