Reviews: First Wife’s Shadow (19)
“Brilliantly twisty”
(Hardback)
by Pauline Cooper
My favourite book of the year so far. Adele Parks is an incredible storyteller. Emma is a very successful businesswoman who is extremely regimented in her habits in order to maintain her commitment to her career. When she meets charismatic widower Matthew at a conference her usual common sense departs and she begins a flirty relationship that goes against everything she normally believes in. Their relationship becomes intense quite quickly and her best friends Heidi and Gina sensibly try to advise her to slow down as she is beginning to behave irrationally. As the story escalates an enormous twist changes everything and puts a totally different perspective on what we have come to believe. The twists keep coming and this wonderfully imaginative book weaves its way to a satisfying and unexpected conclusion. It’s difficult to fully explain this book without spoilers but it is extremely clever, original and a definite page turner that will have you reading late into the night. With shocks aplenty I can’t recommend this highly enough.
“Gripping, twisty, unexpected….”
(Hardback)
by Amanda Woods
If you enjoy twisty unexpected turns and plots this book is for you. Probably Adele’s best book although One Last Secret maybe had me a little more gripped. Emma a hi flying exec in her 40’s has everything except a man who loves her. Mathew a recently widowed 30 something meets Emma and ‘falls’ for her and vice versa. His story is a little strange and people thought it odd he moved on so quickly but having been there myself ‘fight and flight’ take hold and sometimes you get a second chance. Things move very quickly much to Emma’s best friends dismay… is love blind! Loved the twist at the end, did cross my mind that could be the outcome but not for one of the characters!!
“Fantastic read”
(Hardback)

Wow! What a fantastic read that had me gripped from the first page. It’s all about Emma who at first glance seems to have it all, the nice house, the good job….. Then she meets Matthew a widower who seems far too good to be true. The twists just kept on coming and the ending absolutely blew me away. Another fantastic five star read from Adele Parks.
“More menacing intrigue from Parks”
(Hardback)
by Gary Fry
I've been a fan of Adele Parks for a few years now and have really enjoyed her punchy tales which twist and turn and expose their characters' vulnerabilities and draw out their strengths. This latest book is no exception. It starts as an affecting romance, then grows spooky, and then becomes something else entirely. Just when you think you have a handle on the kind of novel Parks is writing, the plot upends once more, so that you're left wondering how on earth it might end. And that's no disappointment. Gripping, surprising, and ultimately moving, it's another fine contribution a growing body of work that continues to impress.
