Reviews: Flatland (4)
“Interesting, and thought provoking”
(Paperback)
by Ross Duncan Boyle
Flatland is a satire on Victorian culture and the book takes place in a 2D world. There is height and length, but not breadth. The book is a must read if you are interested in Mathematics or just looking for a thought provoking book.
“Unlike anything else you'll ever read”
(Paperback)
by Bookseller Emma
"What's your favourite book?" is a pretty impossible question to answer, but this may just be mine. I love Flatland - it is so unlike anything else you'll ever read. It was written by a Victorian mathematician and is still readable today as a fun little story from the point of view of a two-dimensional square. Journey to other (inconceivable) dimensions with him, understand societal prejudices of the day (women are sharp, piercing LINES), and start to understand bigger picture concepts like the tesseract from Interstellar and beyond!
“Flatland”
(Paperback)
by Ecowitch
This is an entertaining and enlightening read, both from the point of view of mathematics and physics and how we see the world through these and the rigidity and conformity of Victorian society and how difficult it was to make changes, even with the support of sound evidence and observation. And despite the difficulty of the subject matter, it is a really easy and enjoyable read with a good bit of wit and humour that allows even the most novice physicist/mathematician can grasp the concepts Abbott covers. This is a book that will really change the way you look at things, even encouraging you into weird positions to gain the appropriate perspective (yes I did crouch beside my table to look at things from a Flatland point of view...). An excellent read.
