Reviews: Fleeced! (1)
“Fleeced”
(Paperback)
by Alan McIntosh
I began liking this book, but as it went on I did get a feeling it is not really about saving taxpayers money, but public sector bashing, which made me really question the value of the authors' observations. It me think whether the authors were really aware they would be alienating many of their readers: not a good idea if you are trying to convert people to your point of view. A lot of the points the authors make are valid and if anyone has worked in the public sector, a lot of what they say will resonate with you regards incompetence and waste. They do touch on other ways that taxpayers are being fleeced, such as by banks and corporate tax evasion, but really this only gets cursory treatment and you get the feeling this is just tokenism: their real ire is reserved for the public sector and it doesn't take them long to get back onto their pet subject! By the end their suggested ways of improving society consists of a wish list of where money could be saved, which reads like school boys' maths drawn up on the back of a jotter, with no real understanding of how many of their suggestions could end up costing more. It then descends into commuter belt, Rab C Nesbitt style ranting and they begin advocating taxpayers should begin suing everyone from the police to the NHS and the Government: which makes you think, won't this just increase costs for the taxpayers with everyone chasing lottery tickets in the courts. Overall an easily readable book which is emotive, though could have been better researched (they don't seem to understand the difference between the European Convention of Human Rights and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union). Really felt like I was reading a tabloid version of the Conservative Party manifesto (unless the Conservative Party manifesto actually reads like this). The book appeared to me like a missed opportunity to give serious treatment to an important subject, with its key theme, the waste of public funds likely to be a key ones in the coming general election.
