Reviews: Garibaldi (1)
“Garibaldi”
(Hardback)
by Smintheus Fellin
Garibaldi's popularity, his skill at rousing the common people, and his military exploits are all credited with making the unification of Italy possible. Considered an Italian national hero, he also served as a global exemplar of mid-19th century revolutionary nationalism and liberalism, in modern times emulated by the likes of Che Guevara, Castro etc. This book narrates Garibaldi's exploits and is mainly a very good biography, well translated from the Italian and quite detailed. Reads well, and history buffs interested in the "Risorgimento" should find it extremely satisfying. It concentrates from Garibaldi's twenties, whne joined the Carbonari Italian patriot revolutionaries, and had to flee Italy after a failed insurrection. Then goes on to recount his contribution to the independence of Uruguay, leading the Italian Legion in the Uruguayan Civil War, and expands onto his return to Italy as a commander in the conflicts of the Risorgimento.Garibaldi has been dubbed the "Hero of the Two Worlds" in tribute to his military expeditions in both South America and Europe.
