Reviews: Going Dark (3)
“Phenomenal”
(Hardback)
Julia Ebner worked for a think tank tracking the online activities of the far right when she realised that the best way to understand an organisation is to infiltrate it. From Info Wars to Trad Wives, Neo-Nazis and trolls, ‘Going Dark’ is a work of remarkable depth and breath. Ebner uses case studies from the organisations she infiltrated to take us through the six stages of radicalisation she experienced; recruitment, socialisation, communication, networking and mobilisation.
No one has produced a work from inside the far-right that so meticulously researched and thoroughly readable. Vital reading for all of us to better understand and therefore combat the rise of the Far-Right.
“Insightful and eye opening”
(Hardback)
A fascinating read. Although I’m not sure I’ve felt as naive before.
Counter terrorism has also been of great interest to me, as have subcultures so this first hand, undercover exploration of such a range of extremist communities has been truly interesting.
Not such a happy read and it’s very troubling especially with the grooming behaviours towards other, not just the vulnerable as I had previously thought.
“This is what journalism is supposed to be.”
(Paperback)
Describing a work of non-fiction as 'like a thriller' feels fairly clichéd at this stage but with this one I was gripped from start to finish. There truly are some terrifying extremist groups whose members walk among us and Ebner was incredibly brave to infiltrate them as she did.
