Reviews: Gone by Midnight (6)
“Nailbiting Read”
(Paperback)
Gone by Midnight is the third in the Crimson Lake series ,I have read the other two books and loved them but this book is absolutely fabulous .Ted and Amanda are a brilliant team of Private Investigators each dealing with the past and working with the Police to solve the mystery of a young boy who seemingly has disappeared from a room in an hotel .The story is set in Cairns in Australia which is crocodile country making the story even more scary and atmospheric .The plot is so clever I didn't guess the ending ,the reader is drawn in hoping against hope that the child will be found alive .Very cleverly written and a great ending .I can't wait for the next book in the series .Many thanks to the Publisher ,the Author and NetGalley for my review copy in return for an honest review .
“Thrilling.”
(Paperback)
Thanks to Macmillan-Tor/Forge and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
'Gone by Midnight' is the latest addition to the Crimson Lake Series. Featuring the inimitable duo of Ted and Amanda, this series just keeps getting better and better. With this novel, Candice Fox has written yet another 5 star novel. A word of advice: although you can read this book as a standalone, your reading experience will be enhanced by reading the previous novels in the series. You really should. Candice Fox knows how thrillers should be written. Indeed, the Crimson Lake series has a winning formula: memorable, enduring characters, taut-plotting that simply oozes suspense, and wonderfully descriptive prose. This story revolves around the disappearance of a young boy from a locked hotel room, whilst the parents of the boy and his three brothers are downstairs eating and drinking. The mother of the boy engages Ted and Amanda to solve the mystery of her son's disappearance, but this is no ordinary abduction.... What follows is a tense, edge of your seat thriller, full of tension and complex, hidden motives. Not everyone is who they seem, and it is up to Ted and Amanda to unravel the Gordian knot of the boy's disappearance, thread by painstaking thread. With pitch-perfect plotting, Fox ratchets up the tension to an unbearable degree, and the climax? Simply stunning. I devoured every page with bated breath. Can't wait .for book 4. Simply brilliant.
“Wacky, Weird and Wonderful Private Detectives”
(Hardback)
A classic mystery set in Cairns. The private detectives here are wacky, weird and wonderful. Amanda Pharell had no tact and no concept of empathy, while Ted Vonkaffey is a well hated accused, dropped, but not cleared paedophile. The story is fast paced - but slow enough to bring in some of the local colour and the swamp and crocodiles have their own parts to play.
I'd read the first book in the series and enjoyed it. This is a good, enjoyable follow up.
“A refreshing change”
(Hardback)
This is the first Candice Fox book I've read and I found the main characters of Ted and Amanda a refreshing change from many other police novels. The plot was fast paced and page turning although I wasn't convinced by the killer's motive in the end.
“Well paced, well written”
(Hardback)
Another well crafted plot, the third in this series. Ted Conkaffey and Amanda Pharrell are called in to investigate the disappearance of an 8 year old boy by his mother. As usual their inclusion is resented and blocked as much as possible by members of the police force. Both Ted and Amanda are still dealing with their demons from their past but trying to move on. They are fascinating characters and Amanda brings a great deal of humour to a dramatic situation. Well-paced and surprising twists and turns.
Many thanks to Netgalley for a digital copy of this title. All opinions expressed are my own.
