Reviews: Grieving Gold (7)
“I cannot stop thinking about this book!”
(Paperback)
This first book in The Luminocity Seed series is an epic start to an epic fantasy tale. Luminocity is a city built on ancient ruins with forgotten technologies. The surface is bathe by the light of 3 gods and beneath the surface is the shadow of a trapped dark god.
This dark and action packed fantasy follows the fate of 5 characters whose destiny is intertwined. The magic is unique and makes this story even more interesting.
From the prologue you get the sense of fantasy, sci-fi, dark, horror and action that will be throughout the whole book. I found the strong presence of these elements very gripping and intriguing. The story is told through the five different POVs, switching between them as the plot is going on. Although this took a bit of getting used to at first, once I got into this system of narration I felt like it provided me with additional suspense.
My only critique would be regarding the lack of introduction of the magic within this world. The magic is so unique and I loved it (I can’t stop thinking about it) and although you can understand it as the story is evolving, I think it would have been so much more powerful to give a clearer insight into how the magic works.
Regardless, this remains a 5 star read for me and I definitely recommend it to fans of dark, adult fantasy. The cliffhanger at the end has me waiting eagerly for book 2 in the series.
“Very original fantasy/science-fiction novel”
(Paperback)
The first in a series, this novel is based in a fantasy world influenced by Central American traditions and food. Many of the characters have "powers" linked to their blood (lies, chances, weight etc..) and are well-developed. The action takes place above and below the city of Luminocity and there's a lot going on in the plot which moves along at a good steady pace. It's entertaining and engaging with a slight horror element thrown in. I look forward to the next volume. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
“One of the more unique stories I've read”
(Hardback)
I hadn't read anything from Daniel McDaniel before but I was drawn in by the blurb about sun gods and dark gods with a great pun on lights being the name of the city of Luminocity.
A multi-pov story of characters of different ages and castes this is kind of a steam punk dystopian type city based on the ruins of a society much like our own but in a different kind of unique world.
Their magic is based on blood and light and so is their version of power being a kind of liquid light.
There's monsters from children's nightmares and a journey to the centre of the earth type story where a more primitive society of humans live more simply in a hunter gatherer type society but in the total darkness of the underground and caves with a load of creatures from nightmares.
I really really enjoyed this, both because of how well the character building has been done with a mix of the world building being perfect at the same time. A mix of serious and slightly more amusing moments with some great morals being put across at the same time.
It's one of the more unique stories I've read and definitely recommend it.
I was gifted an ebook copy of this from the publisher from netgalley.

“Strange worlds with missions to be accomplished.”
(Paperback)
Strange worlds in this fantasy novel, full of interesting characters. They have missions to accomplish but the way will not be easy and often extremely dangerous.
Enjoyed this novel with all its twists and turns. Makes you want to keep reading to find out what will happen next. Enjoy.
“The series has enormous potential and I will certainly be looking for part 2.”
(Hardback)
Not quite sure what to write as I enjoyed this book in parts because it was literally split into interleaving parts!
Whilst I liked the characters and the original locations, I felt the book, as a whole, did not quite come together. Sad really as there are some fascinating characters, locations and concepts.
The fact that I only scored it 3 Stars should not put you off you reading this book as the series has enormous potential and I will certainly be looking for part 2.
