Reviews: Half Wild (6)
“”
(Paperback)
If Harry Potter and The Hunger Games had a book baby this series would be it! My mind has been blown.....this is one of the best, and darkest, sequels I have read.
Nathan's story set in a world of witchcraft and segregation continues with all guns blazing, it just never stops and the narrative threw more than enough plot twists and whatnot at me to keep me satiated.
There was no need for a re-read of Half Blood, Green achieves a brilliant and seamless recap of previous events throughout the first chunk of the novel without hindering the continuation of Nathan's sad and violent story.
The prose itself flows beautifully, Nathan's personal development is equally fascinating and infuriating, in a good way, as he struggles to understand and control his powerful 'gift'. Gabriel gets even more awesome, his role within the narrative is by far the best, everyone needs a Gabriel in their life. Annalise continued to be incredibly annoying and exceptionally naive, very deliberate I am sure, as no doubt she will play a very interesting part in the next book. There is more of the delicious and terrifying Marcus, the father and son relationship between him and Nathan is pushed forward relentlessly in Half Wild. Sally Green is not one to neglect her characters, no one from the first book is forgotten, they are all in here one way or another.
I was amazed by how blood thirsty this book was, and regardless, I loved it. The violence of the world in which Nathan lives is explored fully and, good god, THAT ENDING!
An excellent return to form from Sally Green, one of the best new voices in teen fantasy, roll on book three.....I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS!
“Intense sequel!”
(Paperback)
Half Wild is many things, including stunning, captivating, exceptional, breathtaking, emotional, action packed, and brilliant. Most of all, my ship sailed and I wish nothing more than it to sail even more in the last book. It has to. All the praise (except for Annalise who I despise more than anything).
The characters, oh my beloved cinnamon rolls. Nathan needs hugs. Plenty of hugs. People need to stop torturing him. There was more Gabriel in this story, and he's precious human being. I love him to the pieces, he's so brilliant and gorgeous inside and out. Marcus is so intriguing and cool, and I need a novella about him when he was younger, before Nathan was born. And all the other characters; Nesbitt, Van, and all of them. Except Annalise, I didn't like her in the first book and now I despise her more than anything because of reasons. I won't spoil the story, but if you read the book, you'll hopefully understand my extreme dislike of Annalise.
The story is intense; so intense and so many feelings that I'm not sure how I can handle it all. And I love how dark this story is, and how wild it really is. Compared to this, most YA stories are so tame, and I love how Green does not shy from difficult topics and from all the core that abuse and brewing war brings. Life's not a fairy tale, and this trilogy certainly seems to show the ugly side, too.
The first half of the book - the part were there was no Annalise - was incredible. Don't get me wrong, it was solid, good, and so full of feelings on the second half of the book, but Annalise was being so annoying that I just wanted her to disappear. But anyway, Half Wild was everything. I felt all the feels; I cried, I laughed, I swooned, I got angry, and everything that there is to feel. I love this trilogy to the pieces - I especially love Nathan and Gabriel to the pieces. Preferably together.
“A great second book”
(Paperback)
Half Wild continues so effortlessly from Half Bad and suffers no 2nd novel lag, it feels really strong and I loved every page. The characters begin to grow, the story really gets good pace and there's some surprises and twists i couldn't have foreseen. The series started strong and continues that way too. Can't believe i have to wait another year for the next one! :(
“So So Good!”
(Paperback)
I was so excited to be approved to read this advanced copy and read it cover to cover in one sitting. Completely loved Half Bad and Half Wild is so so much better. I don't want to give away too much of the plot as that just wouldn't be fair on others, but what I will say is poor Nathan. His life is just a fairground ride of extreme highs, and extreme lows. My heart is still sore after reading this one and will be for some time I fear. I push Half Bad into everyone's hands when they come into the store and I shall be doing the same with Half Wild. Better than the first, which I adored, and exceeded my wildest hopes and expectations (and my expectations for it were sky high).
“Suspense and surprises!”
(Paperback)
Okay so admittedly it took me a while to get myself back into the world of Half Bad but eventually I rekindled my love for the characters and finished the book so quickly. If I remember rightly it didn't take me long to finish the first book either- so all is rather promising!
So we're thrown back into Nathan's world where is waiting on Gabriel to return to Mercury's cottage, only to find Nesbitt and Australian witch claiming he knows where Gabriel is and has the Fairborn knife belonging to Nathan. He negotiates to take Nathan to his friend if he agrees to hand over the letters belonging to Gabriel.
From then on we meet Van Dal, Nesbitt and various other witches who are forming an alliance of witches to fight against the Council and its members Soul and Wallend. The problem being, the alliance needs a strong and well feared Black Witch to gain the support of the rebels and this where Nathan comes in...
Throughout, the book Nathan is faced with difficult decisions, a string of lies, betrayal and is enlightened as to who he can and can't trust.
Unfortunately I still haven't warmed to Nathan, I found him frustrating with leading Gabriel on and for acting more like a little boy rather than a man. I understand perhaps he is a confused but realistically we know when we're upsetting others, so I'm not very happy with this ongoing situation. Furthermore, like I found with Half Bad, there is a lot of moving around and meeting various other witches which was interesting but it felt like the first half of the book wasn't as fast paced as I found the last half. But I enjoy the sense of journey this book brings, there's never a dull moment of sitting around and thinking its ongoing and active.
Overall, I enjoyed Half Wild as much as I did Half Bad. I still have a huge love for Gabriel, he's caring, funny and so loyal to Nathan. I'd like to think that from the developments in the last quarter of the book, their relationship can finally evolve in the final installment. A lot of character development, suspense and surprises. Just what you want in a supernatural book. Normally I find that a lot of "second books" in a series seem to be my least favourite, but not Half Wild. Again, I'm left itching to read the next and last book in the trilogy which is set to be released March 2016- very excited!
Thank you again to Penguin for sending me this wonderful book by one of my best loved authors.
