I loved this book. It is about one man in the 50s and 60s who, by virtue of his background drifts from bad company to prison to a sort of redemption but learns about life and himself as moves through life. The story is compelling and the parts where he is in prison but while there actually discovers what love is and can be, are gritty but perfectly told. The story line moves quickly and the supporting characters bring out low life, hustlers and criminals which frames the hero’s action. There is sentiment and action and characterisation in equal measure. The ending is poignant and elegant. Overall, a gripping and perfectly told story.
