Reviews: I Made a Mistake (85)
“A perfect combination of psychological thriller and domestic drama”
(Paperback)
by Nicola
It's always a pleasure to read a Jane Corry book. I know I'm in for a twisty read but with a very human element to it. Poppy Page runs an casting agency for extras. It's at a party for the industry that she sets eyes on her first love, Matthew Gordon, again for the first time since they split up twenty years or so ago. Matthew broke her heart and it's clear there is unfinished business, even though Poppy is now married to Stuart with two daughters. There's another element to the story, that of Betty, Poppy's mother-in-law. I won't say anything much about this as it's best to let it unfold as you read. But I enjoyed both strands, Poppy's for the current day tension and Betty's for the events in the past. I was absolutely enthralled by this story from start to finish. I just didn't want to put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen to Poppy and her family, how the collision course she seemed to be on was going to conclude. It's one of those reads that makes me put myself in the place of the protagonist with a realisation that any one of us could indeed make a mistake that has catastrophic consequences. I particularly liked the everyday aspects of Poppy's life being thrown together with the upheaval in her head and heart, causing complete turmoil. Jane Corry writes about everyday dilemmas brilliantly with a deft touch that draws the reader right into the heart of the narrative. I loved I Made a Mistake. It's a perfect combination of psychological thriller and domestic drama, with skilful plotting and well-drawn characters.

I always get excited when I hear a new book by Jane Corry comes out. I made a mistake by Jane Corry is another excellent read by the author. Poppy Page is married with two children and she owns the Poppy Page Extra company as she was an actress herself years ago. Her husband Stuart is a dentist. Their relationship has kind of distant lately. When she meets an old flame Matthew Gordon at a Christmas event. She has a few drinks and ends up sleeping with him. The next day she knows that she has made a big mistake and even so, when she finds out that he has taken a photo of her and starts blackmailing her and threatening her family. The story also tells us of Betty Page’s Mother in law. How she met her husband Jock who was loving at first but came domineering. But later in life, did everything for her grandchildren and thought of Page as the daughter that she never had. I really enjoyed I made a mistake by Jane Corry. This is a gripping story told in three points of view. What decision we make in life are not always the correct ones and there are always consequences to the decisions we make.
“No Mistakes here”
(Paperback)
by Margaret Duke-Wyer
What a clever plot! What a good read! The plot begins with a death, when someone dies underneath the wheels of a tube train at Waterloo Underground Station. Who died? The platform was crowded, did they fall or were they pushed? This introduces us to the sub-plot of Jane Corry’s novel. We then flash back to six weeks before this incident when we are introduced to Poppy as she attends a function in her role as the owner of a small but successful business and where, unfortunately she runs into an ex-boyfriend – ‘the man that done her wrong’ – ‘her first, and perhaps her true love’. The plot unfolds in three time frames; the current one in which Poppy is married to Stuart (a successful dentist) with two daughters (17 and 14) and her mother-in-law, Betty who lives with the family and is just indispensable. The second time-frame flashes-back to when Betty was a girl and her unhappy marriage to Jock. The final time-frame is current and sees someone in the dock at the Old Bailey accused of murder. And of course there are surprises as the plot unfolds. Did I like Poppy – not so sure. Same for Stuart really, but I did really like Betty. Her story held me captive. I made a mistake – haven’t we all, one way or another. However, no mistake here – Really hits the mark, great story. Thank you to the author, publishers and NetGalley for providing an ARC via my Kindle in return for an honest review.
“Value what you have”
(Paperback)

I absolutely loved Poppy the main character. My heart went out to her after she thought she still loved her first true love. Her mother in law was great and I loved that her life story is told alongside Poppy's. Tragedy strikes but as a result life eventually gets better for Poppy and her family. Never give up, all is not lost.
“Gripping”

received an email from Net Galley regarding this book and decided I would request this even though I hardly ever read thrillers. I was hooked from page 1 absolutely devoured it in two days . I am not keen on characters telling the story but for this book it so worked - Poppy and her mother in law, the family relationships and heir histories and then Matthew! It kept me on the edge of my seat with so many twists and turns and yet had a brilliant unexpected ending which drew to a proper conclusion. I could not put this book down I kept thinking I would just read the one chapter and then I couldn’t stop!! LOVED LOVED it and am now looking to purchase other books from this author and cannot recommend this particular book enough.
