“Another smashing read from Curtis”
(Hardback)
Idolfire is a character-driven fantasy that focuses heavily on the thoughts and feelings of our protagonists, whilst still delivering an exciting adventure in the process.
I held off reading this for a while as I loved both Frontier and Floating Hotel and wasn't sure about the jump to fantasy, but suffice to say, I am an idiot. Whilst drastically different to Curtis' previous books, the writing once again had me hooked from the beginning, with everything feeling so real and believable. I did struggle with a specific character who, albeit intentionally unlikeable, was borderline infuriating for a while, but it passed and worked within the plot.
Overall an excellent one-shot fantasy with romantic elements, and I immediately want more from this world too.
“Grace Curtis has done it again!”
(Hardback)
A slow-burn sapphic road-trip?! Sign me up! As a fan of Grace Curtis I had a feeling I would love this and I was right. This follows Kirby and Aleya on an epic journey to the mythical city of Nivela, Kirby seeking redemption and Aleya seeking to prove herself. This book delivers escapades, a colourful cast of characters, impulsive moments and plenty of high jinks! I still think about the ending and how incredibly well written it is and I ‘m not entirely sure what to do with my life since I finished this book!
“FANTASTIC ♥️”
(Hardback)
Absolutely brilliant storyline that is wrapped into this gorgeous beautiful book.
FANTASTIC ♥️
“An absolute treat”
(Paperback)
I am at the stage with Curtis where I will immediately buy whatever she writes, and Idolfire was an absolute treat. A fantasy standalone with a big story told through the eyes of three broken and totally different people whose accidental convergence will change the world and allow a dying city to finally meet its overdue end. Beautiful, heart rending and with some moments of nail biting peril, Idolfire is a journey well worth travelling, but bring tissues and prepare to be surprised. I adored this, and found myself particularly fond of Kirby in her kindness and gentleness she showed such heart and bravery, I honestly believe that without her, neither Aleya nor a character that is introduced half way through the book, would have succeeded in becoming the people that they turn out to be. I think we all need a Kirby in our lives, she is a treasure. A simply wonderful read.
“A beautiful character led fantasy”
(Hardback)
Ah man....why does she always make me cry?
Switching from sci-fi to a more dystopian fantasy style, I was looking forward to Idolfire, but a little unsure what to expect. I shouldn't have hesitated. Curtis does a fantastic job of writing characters that learn, and love, and grow, regardless of the setting she has chosen. Idolfire is no exception. A story of grief, and loss, but also hope and faith, Idolfire looks at worship, religion and greed in a small story that has a never-ending scope.
As a fantasy - it has a magic system that is fantastically done, and quite unique. I loved the fact that it isn't fully explained, that there are still questions and debates and choices to be made. That there is a morality to the magic use that our characters see from different angles. Kirby and Aleya come from vastly different societies, have different aims and intentions and yet somehow work so well together.
Whatever Curtis releases next, I've no doubt it will be a spectacular glimpse into the human condition that I will want to add to my shelf.
