“The Ghost are trying to say something to you”
(Hardback)
This is a fabulous ghost story. I had to read this book during the day time because some of the story just scared me. I love the main character Sonya who trys to stand up to all that's going on in the house she inherited, and she does pretty well until the end of the novel when she enters The World through a Looking glass (mirror). Of course all the supporting characters are fortright and caring and very involved in what Sonya is experiencing and happy to help her. It makes me feel that Sonya has someone to support her through this difficult time. I love Sonya's new doggy friend Yoda who stands by her when events become scary. And finally, I wish that there was a happy ending in this novel because it leaves so many open questions about what's going to happen next, but I still can't wait to read the next story in this series, because it's probably going to be another bumpy and scary ride to the finish.
I want to thank St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for an advance copy of this story.
“Mystery, ghosts - and a massive cliffhanger!”
(Hardback)
I absolutely loved this book, full of mystery and ghosts, along with a slow burning romance, all in Nora Roberts trademark writing style. I think I'd know a Nora Roberts book even if it didn't have a cover simply by the writing style!
Sonya McTavish is due to get married, but finds her fiance cheating just before the wedding, and ditches him. But he's vindictive and keeps causing her aggravation, as they work for the same firm, leaving her to her quit her job and work for herself. But then she hears from a solicitor that an uncle she never knew she had has left her a Victorian mansion in Maine, but she has to live in it for 3 years to inherit. After careful thought she ends up moving to Maine and instantly falls in love with the house, although not so much all of the ghostly inhabitants - although she slowly gets used to most of them, especially the ones who make the beds and tidy up all the time!
I loved all the charactes in this book, especially Cleo, Sonya's best friend, who ends up moving into the mansion with her. There's a slow burning romance for Sonya with one of the solicitors dealing with the inheritance, and lots of ghostly goings-on, with one evil and quite scary ghost who has vowed never to leave and has killed various brides over the centuries.
The only thing that stopped this from being a 5-star read for me is the massive cliffhanger at the end of the book. Now I know this is a trilogy, but I really need each part of the trilogy to have some sort of satisfactory ending leading into the next book, but this felt like half the book was missing because the ending was so abrupt and unexpected, which I found extremely disappointing, especially as we'll probably have to wait another year for the next installment. Saying that I will definitely read it, I just wish it was published sooner rather than later so I don't forget what happened!
“A Good Beginning with Great Atmosphere”
(Hardback)
4.25/5⭐️
Book 1 of the Lost Bride Trilogy, this is a dual timelines story revolving around a centuries-old curse (yes, a real witch) that has claimed seven brides from the Poole Victorian mansion on the coast of Maine.
Sonya, our current-day heroine, is a graphic designer who is anticipating her wedding only to discover a betrayal that leads to a canceled wedding. When she is then contacted by her late uncle’s lawyer (an uncle that she did not know existed) and learns that she has inherited his estate if she lives there for three years, she seizes the chance to freelance and moves to Maine. As she becomes aware that the house is ghost-ridden, with both benign and frightening happenings taking place, she enlists the help of her friends (both local and back home) to help her in researching the history of the house/brides in order to break the curse.
I enjoyed this book but did have two issues with it. First, the attraction between Sonya and Trey (the lawyer’s son, and an attorney himself) felt a little rushed to me. After a few platonic meetings, Sonya basically seems to become impatient with the relationship’s progress and moves things along at a fast pace. Second, while I understand that this is the first in a trilogy, the ending seemed rather abrupt, and the cliffhanger felt rushed and out-of-the-blue to me.
However, even with the irks, I enjoyed this beginning and am looking forward to the rest of the story playing out.
My sincere thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing the free early arc of Inheritance for review. The opinions are strictly my own.
“Captivating Story”
(Hardback)
Inheritance by Nora Roberts
I give this book 4.5 stars
This is going to be a trilogy and the ending has me desperately eager to find out how long I have to wait for book 2!
The authors way of telling a story is captivating and the descriptive writing allowed me to picture the manor vividly and all the characters were brought to life from between the pages for me especially Sonya. You have a mystery including a curse,a mirror, dreams, dogs, romance and both whimsical and malice goings on from the past inhabitants. If you’ve not tried this author and enjoy a paranormal mystery go grab a copy.
“Debut of The Lost Bride Trilogy!”
(Hardback)
Inheritance by Nora Roberts is the debut of The Lost Bride Trilogy. Sonya MacTavish is fortunate when she cancels a meeting with the wedding florist. She comes home early and catches her fiancé in a compromising position. Unfortunately, it leads to trouble in the workplace. It turns out to be a blessing for Sonya when she inherits a gorgeous Victorian home on the coast of Maine. It gives Sonya a fresh start. I loved the descriptions of the home. I wanted the gorgeous two-story turret library. Of course, as with any two-century old home, it has a few quirks and maybe a few ghosts. Sonya is a relatable and realistic character. She is a talented graphic designer. I like Sonya’s mother, Winter and her best friend, Cleo. I thought Cleo’s idea of cursing Sonya’s ex-fiancé was a good one (he deserved to have a bad case of jock itch). There is a good cast of secondary characters. The spirited happenings at the manor house Sonya inherited ranged from funny to helpful to scary. It will be interesting to see how the bride tale plays out. I felt that the romance between Sonya and Trey happened too quickly. There is an attraction between the pair. They were friendly and slightly flirty as they got to know each other. All of the sudden, though, they moved from flirty to the pair doing the horizontal mambo. I wanted them to get to each other (more than seeing each other a few times casually) and date before hopping into bed together. Their relationship lacked sizzle. Certain facts are repeated often such as details about Sonya’s ex-fiancé. I felt the particulars of Sonya’s job (what she created for each client, how it looked, the back-and-forth communication) were unnecessary or at least not in such detail. It slowed down the pace of the story and the tempo was already on the slow side (details of Sonya’s daily activities such as what Sonya fixed for each meal, reading her emails, walking the dog, running errands). The story could have benefited from an infusion of action and suspense. There is an overabundance of foul language (fair warning). The long-winded story came to an abrupt end with a sudden cliffhanger (it was so sudden that I got whiplash). I normally enjoy Nora Roberts paranormal novels, but this one was hard for me to finish.
