Reviews: It Devours! (1)
“Perfectly Creepy”
(Hardback)
It Devours! is the latest Welcome to Night Vale novel by its brilliant creators, bringing all your favourite Night Vale citizens to print form like Carlos, the Hooded Figures, Pamela Winchell and John Peters - you know, the farmer. While It Devours! is set within the canon Night Vale-verse you don't have to be caught up on the podcasts or even to have listened to the podcasts at all to enjoy this book; although I personally would recommend at least a background knowledge of Welcome to Night Vale in order to fully appreciate this book.
Perfect Carlos and his perfect hair is still haunted by his forey into the other desert world through the house that doesn't exist and is determined that no Night Vale citizen should suffer the same fate. However, whenever he tries to investigate the house using science there are mysterious rumblings with disastrous consequences. With the aid of Nilanjana, a fellow scientist, they set out to discover the cause of these, unearthing religious conspiracies, a potential romance and a lot of worms underneath Big Ricos as they go.
I have been an avid Welcome to Night Vale fan for many years now and, since I loved the first book Fink and Cranor wrote for Night Vale, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one. I was a little behind on the podcast before reading it (I'd had a fairly long break from it) and so, contrary to their reassurances that I'd be fine reading without being caught up, I speed-listened through the podcast until I'd hit the episodes where they'd finished writing It Devours! While the majority of the novel is, as they say, a stand-alone thing there was one particular aspect I'm very glad I caught up with the podcast for.
I thought It Devours! was a fantastic novel with a brilliant story line; what I particularly love about the Night Vale novels is the way they give you insights into areas of Night Vale that may be less mentioned on the podcast. Also, if this is a thing that matters to you as a reader (it matters a lot to me) this is an absolutely gorgeous book. I mean, the cover art and the colours and the end-papers and just everything about the design of It Devours! is immensely good-looking.
So, if mysterious desert rumblings, science and a terrifying God is your jam then you are going to just love this novel!
