Reviews: Kangchenjunga (1)
“A Remarkable Work”
(Hardback)
Doug Scott, one of the finest ever Himalayan climbers, sadly passed away last year. Completing this outstanding book was one of his final acts.
Kanchenjunga is a complete biography of the mountain and only in its final chapter does Doug describe his own remarkable ascent in 1979 of the third highest mountain in the world, which was the third ever ascent, and the first without the use of supplementary oxygen.
This truly fascinating history of Kanchenjunga mirrors the history of British Himalayan expeditions, from early colonial surveys through the era of wealthy adventurers like Alistair Crowley, to the pre and post war military style sieges and finally to the amazing alpine style climbs exemplified by Doug Scott’s own ascent of Kanchenjunga.
The book has some gorgeous photos including some historic ones, and Doug Scott’s love of the mountains and people of Nepal is obvious from every page.
