“Beautiful yearning”
(Hardback)
This is an incredibly well presented and deeply researched work; one in which I feel that both casual readers of Camus and scholars alike will be able to find neutral ground on which to discuss, or, if anything, just be glad to have all these words of Camus, once fossilised in history, at last translated into English in full.
It is so rare for authors to continue to live on posthumously, so many books are released, especially now, and so many are forgotten; it is even rarer to remain as popular as Camus. He holds a kind of grip and quality on the literary scene like no other, perhaps aside from Dostoyevsky and Kafka, he has this great simplicity and extreme tautness in writing, both in his literature and philosophy, that I think continues to allow extreme relevancy and accessibility, especially for those who use him as an introductory point - I myself did not begin to enjoy reading as an adult until in my late teens when I found The Stranger/Outsider. You will find this beautifully minimal prose perhaps even more in his intimate correspondence, and I think if you read this alongside his other brilliantly crafted works you'll really enrich the experience - personally, I might dig out my copy of his notebooks too.
I truly think that such a book as this, clocking in at around 1200 pages, gives readers their money's worth, and that it is a great one to dip in throughout the year (or perhaps just to binge if you can handle it - if so, by all means go ahead and experience it!).
