Reviews: Masterly Batting (1)
“Lots to read and talk about for the cricket tragic”
(Hardback)
by CB Fry
This book, despite the subtitle "100 great Test centuries", is indeed the authors' nominations for the 100 greatest ever. I read a lot of cricket books and have seen my share of those purporting to rate the best ever this or that. This one is a little different, however, as it's clear the authors have put a great deal of thought into the rating system used, modifying it by common sense where necessary, but mainly as there is no wasted space with lists of this or that parameter, almost all of the book being used to describe the innings chosen. And what writers - Frith, Chalke, Piesse, Vice, Manthorp, Sissons, Smyth to name but a few. Despite the fact that so many contributors have been used, it isn't that obvious (other than in a couple of cases) as the styles interleave quite well. There a few statistics at the back, such as which countries feature most, and which batsmen (Bradman and Lara have the most represented in the top 100, with five each). If you want to know who is number one, go out and buy it - no spoilers here!
