Reviews: Max Magic (38)
“Fun, chaos, magic!”
(Paperback)
Anything is possible….
As the cover promises, this story contains fun, chaos and magic!
A lot of celebrities seem to be writing childrens books these days, particularly while they had nothing else to do during lockdown.
This is the first childrens book from TV presenter and lifelong magician, Stephen Mulhern.
Max Mullers (no need to ask where the name comes from) is a boy who loves magic and wants to be the greatest magician in the world! He uses his tricks to fight off schoolyard bullies and save his Dad’s market stall from closing.
There are a few illustrations within the book, similar to those you’d find in any book for readers of this age (I’d say anywhere from 7-12 years, depending on reading level). The cover is bright and appealing and the sprayed edges are a colourful added bonus.
I can see this being the first of many adventures to come for Max and his friends.
“Great”
(Paperback)
I read this book and absolutely loved it. I do appreciate that I’m definitely not the target audience for the book but my young niece read it alongside me and really enjoyed it.
Max Magic is a great character and really relatable to so many young people. He’s from a household without much spare money, there’s bullying on his radar and he has an internal struggle on how to achieve his best. Mix in a huge dollop of magic, a quirky gran and a talking dog and you have the makings for a really entertaining and engaging story guaranteed to leave you entertained. Max has a small group of friends around him that are supportive and genuine. The book really showcases what can happen if you surround yourself with good people and always try your best to do good; a message that’s great to give to kids and adults alike. I’m excited to see what’s next for Max.
“Magic, morals and happiness bursting from every page”
(Paperback)
Stephen Mulhern has managed to deliver with the adventures of max and his friends, not forgetting his talking dog lucky! Well paced storyline and full of quirky humour and wonderful characters that create a great storyline. So max loves magic, but he does lack some skills, but his attitude is unrelenting and his loving family and devoted friends encourage him to keep trying. Then one day, after a bad bullying session with the school bully, max discovers real magic and is bestowed with the gift. The story then covers the moralistic approach max has to take, given his new powers. His friends help him to correct his mistakes and instead they all work together to make things better than they were initially. There are lots of great jokes strewn throughout and a great use of imagination has this first adventure leading you excitingly from chapter to chapter and the most adorable illustrations. Set to be a classic
