Reviews: Midnight (7)
“People often say books are chilling and spine tingling, but this definitely, is in every possible way.”

I absolutely adored Amy’s book Breathless, and practically leapt at the chance to read Midnight. I was worried she wouldn’t be able to get the same kind of tense, claustrophobic, bone chilling thriller that she got with Breathless but she totally did. Not only is this book set in the coldest, most inhospitable environment on the planet, you never know who or what to trust, even your own mind. It’s multilayered and well rounded and there’s flies that you don’t even know are clues threaded through it and it’s just brilliantly written. I felt this one started a bit slower than Breathless. But keep in mind that’s not a negative thing. It’s not all guns blazing right from the off. It’s this gentle introduction, dripping in little suggestions, just enough to make you uncertain and keep you on the edge of your seat - something that doesn’t fade. I devoured this book in one day. Apart from getting up to use the loo, get food, or let the dog in the garden, I was curled up under a blanket absolutely absorbed in this frightening world Amy has created. It’s the true definition of a page turner. You won’t be able to get anything else done once you’ve got this in your hands. I love it when I read about authors visiting a place they want to set their book in, or buying all the books to research, or talking to a real-life person influencing a character - but Amy does this on an unbelievable scale. Not many authors would choose to go on a trip to Antarctica, go into the water and onto the ice, but you can really tell that she did so. It’s not just come from a book, or just her imagination. There’s a detail here, a passion here that only comes with experience and it’s amazing. You can tell she’s lived it. Hopefully not the murdery side of it, but she’s scene every danger and that comes through with every scene. This is the second cruise-based disaster thriller story I’ve read this year. I’m starting to have second thoughts about my desire to go on one. Both this and Breathless would make excellent movies, and yet, there’s part of me that doesn’t want them to, in a way. I think a whole lot of the terror comes from the not seeing, not knowing. And I feel a big screen might miss that. People often say books are chilling and spine tingling, but this definitely, is in every possible way. I thought Breathless would be hard to equal, but she’s done it, which bodes well for the next offering. It’s safe to say there will be Amy McCulloch shelves on bookcases around the world.
“Brilliant”

I love Amy McCulloch books and her style of writing. I was hooked after reading Breathless and I think this one is just as captivating. Her storylines are well thought out and her attention to detail in describing the locations mentioned in her books is amazing. You almost feel you are there with the characters as the story unfolds. It feels like the author is writing from first hand experience of visiting the locations. This was another page turner with lots of twists and turns along the way . Didn’t see the twists at the end coming. Can’t wait for the next Amy McCulloch book.
“A bit far fetched.”

I really enjoyed the author’s previous novel ‘Breathless’ so I am looking forward to reading ‘Midnight’ by Amy Mc Culloch. Olivia and her Art dealer boyfriend Aaron are heading on a cruise to Antarctica. The cruise is one of a lifetime opportunity and for Aaron is to show of a artist’s work for an auction which the artist has recently died. But Aaron in all the commotion goes missing which leaves Olivia on her own on the cruise for the next 14 days. Where there is no phone signal and communication to the rest of the world. Which leaves Olivia to take charge of the auction in Aaron’s place. But things are not right on the cruise ship. Not only as Aaron gone missing but the couple that she swapped cabins with ends up dead. They where poisoned and when she returns to the cabin that she shares with 3 other women it has been ransacked. What the hell is going on? Thank you, Penguin Michael Joseph, for a copy of Midnight by Amy Mc Culloch. I had high hopes for this after reading her previous novel. I liked the premise of this story and the description of the setting and the wildlife. It really made me feel like I was there. But Olivia for me wasn’t that much of a likeable character and the antics of the killer for me was too farfetched. I wasn’t convinced how they managed to do that all on their own. So, the ending was a bit disappointing. 3.5 stars from me.
“Excellent chilly thriller”
(Hardback)
by Elizabeth Wilkins
A chilly thriller that is beautifully done, descriptively putting you right into the Arctic action with an unpredictable mystery and some engaging characters. The bleak but gorgeous setting really is intriguing and the isolated nature makes the story utterly compelling, there's nowhere to hide and a killer on the loose. Overall a terrific thriller and I look forward to many more from this author.
“Atmospheric”

The chance to sail on a luxury cruise to the Antarctic helping organise an Art Auction for an esteemed & recently deceased artist was every thing Olivia could have wished for, especially along with boyfriend Aaron. However things are not smooth sailing. Aaron gets called off the boat for a business meeting & doesn't return before the ship sails. Olivia swaps the luxury cabin that she should have been in with a honeymoon couple only for them to be taken fatally ill. The shared cabin she swapped into is ransacked & Olivia struggles with her fears of the sea. I have always had a fascination for Antarctica & this book really appealed to me, especially after enjoying 'Breathless' The descriptions of the continent did capture the setting although the majority took place on the ship. I did enjoy the book but perhaps not quite as much as I hoped. Maybe it was because I never really bonded with Olivia. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
