“Probably the best book I’ve read”
(Hardback)
by Laura M
I really love Daniel Cole’s writing style. I enjoyed his “Wolf” trilogy of books and if I’m honest wasn’t sure I would like “new” characters, but I throughly enjoyed mimic. Excellent story line. Page turning. Can’t wait for the next book!
“Brilliant, killer Read”
(Hardback)

WOW, I just finished reading this absolutely brilliant book. Having read Daniel Cole’s previous Trilogy and living it I was excited to receive an eARC of this book. It certainly didn’t disappoint. It’s 1989, A killer is on the loose, not just a plain old killer though this one is also an artist, when he has killed a person he stages the body as a Greek statue the first one being the famous statue of the Thinker by Rodin. Detective Sergeant BenjaminChambers is called out to the first statue, which initially looks like any ordinary statue on the scene are two other officers one being Winter. Who ends up working briefly with Chambers mainly because he happens to be on duty and at the first couple of scenes. It’s only after another two bodies are found that a bigger investigation starts taking place. Unfortunately DCI Hamm is not accepting any of Chambers theories seriously, despite him having found 2 people that may or may not be the killer. The situation is made worse when someone comes forward claiming to be the killer, signing a full confession. Chambers is still not convinced and is still watching suspects. Until he is attacked one night and almost killed if it hadn’t been for Winter he would have died. The case is closed. Until 1996, when Jordan Marshall a trainee officer starts looking into the case again. She approaches Chamber’s, and Winter’s with her theories. This is a fast paced engrossing read, despite it being about Murder and a serial killer I liked that there were also some lighter moments in the story. I enjoyed some of the relationships between the characters. But also Mr Cole shows the toll that the initial investigation and subsequent injuries sustained by Chamber’s had had on him not just physically. The same for Winter’s who had been off sick several times due to nightmares of the night Chamber’s was injured and someone else had died. Marshall also has her own demons she is fighting which stem back to 1989. Never knowing where the killer was going to strike next, as he always seemed to be one step ahead this is a great read for anyone who likes there crime stories a little more gory than a cozy crime. An absolute 5 ⭐️ Read for me I would like to thank #netgalley and #Orionbooks for an eARC of this book in exchange for an honest, fair and unbiased review.
“Loved it”
(Hardback)
by Amanda Oughton
I have been a fan of Daniel’s work ever since I had the good fortune to pick up a copy of his debut novel ‘Ragdoll’ a couple of years ago. Since then I have read and loved the other books that he has written. I read the synopsis for ‘Mimic’ and it certainly sounded like a thrilling read and then some. Well it certainly was a thrilling read, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading but more about that in a bit. I was drawn to this book by the synopsis along and the story within the book’s covers sealed the deal as it were. Once I started to read, I just couldn’t stop. I made the fatal mistake of starting to read ‘Mimic’ just before I went to bed. Let’s just say that bedtime was delayed and I had a ‘lack of sleep’ hangover the following morning. The book wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. If I wasn’t reading the book, I was thinking about the book. If I had to put the book to one side for any reason then I would immediately look forward to being able to pick the book up again. You could certainly say that I was like a ‘Mimic’ addict who was always in need of her next fix. I found ‘Mimic’ to be a gripping read, which kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat. ‘Mimic’ is superbly written. I love the way in which Daniel grabs the reader’s attention and then he reels the reader in. For me, ‘Mimic’ hit the ground running and maintained a fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Mimic’ felt like being on one hell of a scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I felt as though I was part of the story and that’s thanks to Daniel’s very vivid and realistic storytelling. In short, I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Mimic’ and I would definitely recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Daniel’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.
“Art themed serial killer”
(Hardback)
by Homeburd
I think once you get past the fact that this isn’t a ‘Ragdoll’ book and give it a chance it’s a very good read. Chambers, Winter and Marshall are a bit of an odd assortment of characters but then maybe the best teams are. I see this book is billed as a standalone but I would have thought there was scope for a return. I like this type of serial killer book where the killer (or more correctly the author) has a theme and puts a lot of planning into his murders. With the art theme here the drawings were a really great addition and saved me from an internet search to check out the works of art. I’m intrigued to see what Daniel Cole offers us next.
“Great detective story”
(Hardback)
by Maria Hall
Mimic - Author: Daniel Cole Publisher:Orion Publishing Group Publication Date 19/8/21 4.5 ⭐️ out of 5 NO SPOILERS Strong follow up to the Rag Doll series which is one of my favourite detective reads of the past few years and a very tough act to follow. Mimic has an intriguing opening. The story then jumps forward a few years and the pace quickens before slowing a bit towards the end. I enjoyed the dialogue between the 3 main characters which is realistic and infused with some great dark humour. Although billed as a standalone thriller there did seem to be the potential to continue with this trio and I for one would definitely be interested to read another book should there be one Highly recommended I’d like to thank the author, publisher and netgalley for providing me with this advance digital copy in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
