Reviews: Missing Pieces (57)
“Classy twisting thriller”
(Hardback)
by Mavis Tiller
Missing Pieces is an apt title, there are so many of them at the beginning of the book. It is a long, complex story involving many time lines which could be confusing if the narrative was less compelling. The story is built bit by bit, gradually filling in those missing pieces and building the suspense, never quite getting to the ‘why?’. The further I read, the harder it became to but the book down. It was great to have an intelligent, feisty heroine that you come to care about (Tim writes women very well!) who survives for months on a deserted island under horrendous circumstances. It all leads to a well thought out ending where all the loose ends are tied up. I thought it was terrific, full of action and recommend it.
“Gripping”
(Hardback)
by Michellle De Alwis
Missing Pieces by Tim weaver is another great book from the author. I have read the David Raker series, and this doesn’t disappoint. This is a standalone novel. Doctor Rebekah Murphy has travelled with her brother Johnny a writer to Crow island. An island 101 miles from the mainland. They become separated when they have been travelling though dense forest and come across a body of the man they are supposed to meet. When the killer starts chancing them because they have seen to much. The problem is that the island is closed for the winter and has no way to contact the mainland so she does what she can to survive over 5 months. Rebekah is a tough cookie and the thought of coming home to her two girls keep her going until the island opens again and she can escape it. She doesn’t know why someone is trying to kill her and wonders if her brother Johnny is still alive. The story is set in two timelines. The time before and what led her up to her present predicament. And Detective Frank Travis who is dealing with cold cases which involves searching for Rebekah and her brother Johnny. This is another gripping, well written read from Tim weaver of one woman’s determination to survive on a deserted island. Why is she being hunted by a killer and where is her brother Johnny? I was just slightly disappointed at the explanation at the end of what happened it was a bit long winded. 4 stars from me
“What a Puzzler!”
(Hardback)
by Angela Thomas
Rebekah Murphy and her brother Johnny set out on a day trip to Crow Island, a small island just over one hundred miles from the U.S. mainland. This small place was inhabited for only half a year, mostly by fisherman. There were very few facilities on the island, which had been devastated by a hurricane in the 1980s. Johnny had set up a research interview with a local historian who was working on the island and Rebekah had offered to give him a lift. She had two very young children but was eager to spend time with her brother. However, what should have been a simple task turned into a nightmare, as it became obvious that they had stumbled upon a murder – and the murderers! Without giving away any more of the plot, I can say that Rebekah was abandoned on the island, with little chance of escape, and with the threat of being hunted by the killers. This novel by Tim Weaver is like a jigsaw puzzle. There are so many strands to the plot that must be fitted together to understand what is happening to Rebekah. The story is told from different standpoints and in different time zones. Mostly, it is clear where and when the story is taking place, but at times it was a little confusing. I think the author portrayed Rebekah’s emotional state well as she learned to cope with her situation. I enjoyed his portrayal of this resilient and brave woman. All in all, this was an intriguing and well written book, but I would have appreciated less changes in the timeline. I would like to thank NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book.
“Jumbled relationship, slow starter but stick with it”
(Hardback)
by Helen Wilkinson
Wow, lots of jumbled pieces at the start and I struggled to make sense of them but as the story picked up pace I was totally gripped. It wasn't until the last page that the final piece fell in to place like a completed jigsaw. I would love to see this book made in to a drama on the television. At the heart is a brother and sisters relationship and the repercussions of friendship. Enjoy I did
“A strong female protagonist”
(Hardback)
by Rowena
I always associate Tim Weaver books with holidays. I save books that I know will add to the enjoyment of the holiday and I know I can rely on Tim Weaver to provide me with a good, solid, realistic, well-written mystery that won’t irritate me because it’s implausible or badly written. So I was disappointed to begin with that this book wasn’t a David Raker ‘missing persons’ mystery. I enjoyed the tenth novel in the series, No One Home, so much, as it had such an intriguing premise: nine neighbours who disappear without a trace after a dinner party. Also, the novel was set near where I live and the geographical details were accurate. Tim Weaver obviously does his research properly. However, once I got into this book I forgot my misapprehensions and found myself turning the pages, racing through to the end and neglecting the housework. I like the fact that Tim Weaver has created a strong female protagonist in Rebekah, who finds herself struggling to survive for 5 months on an uninhabited island. He’s good at multilayered plots and his description of family relationships always makes his work more complex than your average thriller. But I think Tim Weaver is better at UK backgrounds, as some of the characters here seem a bit clichéd - you can recognise the types, such as Frank Travis, from American cop shows - and the villains are a bit one-dimensional. So 4 stars rather than 5 - but still, a good holiday read if you’re lucky enough to get away. Many thanks to NetGalley and Penguin Michael Joseph Publishing for this ARC.
