Reviews: Munich (14)
“An excellent read”
(Hardback)
I am an avid Robert Harris fan and love the way he writes about historical events which seem familiar but come alive in unexpected ways through his telling of the story. Munich fulfills its promise. The way he describes the complexities of the meetings at Munich and the level of tension experienced by the chatacters brings 1938 to life. Above all, Robetr Harris gives a true depiction of Neville Chamberlain, of his determination and his tenacity in his dealings with Hitler, and makes us realise the vital importance of the deal which Chamberlain made which meant war was avoided until 1939.
“Expecting this book to be a very good read!”
(Hardback)
I bought this book for my husband, sadly he has not read it yet - I shall possibly read it before him. I have given the book 5 stars as we have both read a number of books by this author and have enjoyed reading all of them!.
“Gripping from the start”
(Hardback)
I've never read Robert Harris before but will definitely be looking for more. This is s gripping story and I love the fact that the backdrop to the story is all too real. The characters are extremely well drawn and the historical detail is brilliant.
“Brilliant & Outstanding.”
(Hardback)
This was my first Harris novel & I'll definitely read more. As someone who's studied & researched this period of history I knew I needed this. It paints a way better perspective of Chamberlain that he didn't just bend over backwards to what Hitler wanted. He outsmarted him by preventing the great conflict by another year at a time when people didn't want another conflict with Germany. I loved the placing of Hartmann who has anti Hitler views but is careful amongst the regime as I wanted him to make it a lot. It shows how Germans where cheering for Chamberlain more then Hitler which astounded me. Just when this was slowing down it picked up the pace again that's how a good thriller is done. All I can say is bravo to Mr Harris on this & look forward to reading V2 as I got that a while back can't wait to get started.
“The master of historical intrigue”
(Hardback)
Robert Harris has the enviable knack of making you forget that you know the outcome of the events he is fictionalising and immersing you completely in the moment. The tension in Munich as Great Britain and Germany teeter on the brink of war during the Sudetenland Crisis of 1938 is palpable and compelling, as we are witness to the murky dealings of British, German, French and Italian politicians and diplomats at the infamous summit meeting. The figure of Neville Chamberlain in particular is no mere historical caricature, but a living, breathing human being, agonising over the conflicting demands of his noble intentions and the realities of dealing personally with Hitler.
