“Stag-lit”
(Paperback)
by Helen Bennett
...straight from the twenty-something male mind, set in early 80s when class distinction was still fairly prevalent. Very reminiscent of 'What's it All About, Alfie'. The reader quickly learns that Kevin is seeing a girl: Helen, whom he considers to be above his station and is afraid of giving a bad impression and scaring her off. He is also concerned about the ridicule of his mates if they should learn that he is 'going soft'. Kevin has had one serious relationship before,Sandra, which did not work out and he has mingled regrets and relief about this. He also has an 'on-and-off' relationship with Beryl, who is crazy about him and his for the asking. But he has reached a stage in his life where he wants more than 'a romp in the hay'and just being 'one of the lads'. From a feminine POV, it seems that Helen is attracted to Kevin but treading warily, so as to get to know him better. Hopefully this is true - or is he just a study project, as she does nothing to encourage his mild advances, (smart, sensible clothes; no make-up, etc.)but does not rebuff them either? The general lack of communication between classes of that era must have nipped many a promising relationship in the bud. The reader hopes this does not happen in this case and wishes Kevin the best of luck. I loved the poems, which really help to focus Kevin's thoughts. And I can't wait to read the sequel. Well done Dave!
