“Amazing”
(Paperback)
by Evie Perry
After years of not being motivated to read, I've finally found a book that I genuinely enjoyed. Not only was it thought-provoking, but the plot also kept me interested and I got through it in less than a few days, which I never do, so I would highly recommend this book to anybody who is thinking about reading it.
“I read it in a day- a politically terrifying read”
(Paperback)
by Joshua Whitehead
Winston Smith works at the Ministry of Truth, one of the ministries of the despotic rulers known as 'the Party' , where he rewrites history. The state of Oceania is under totalitarian control, but Winston has his doubts. Between once forgotten memories of a past way of life, and rumours of the counter-revolutionary Brotherhood, Winston silently dreams of overthrowing the regime. The book documents Winston's attempts to find minds similar to his own; dangerous liaisons ensue as Winston attempts to form much forbidden relationships with other members and live out his life outside of the view of Big Brother and the ThoughtPolice. Orwell's masterpiece is a skilful attack on the totalitarian regimes of the 19th century told as an intense psychological thriller. This book changed my life politically, and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to better understand modern political history and its consequences.
“1984 by George Orwell”
(Paperback)
by Christine Rennie
I listened to George Orwell’s 1984; an Audible Original production, which was an awesome production, just like listening to a play. The cast, the music, the narration all came together to make this a superior production of George Orwell’s 1984.
“Simply terrifying”
(Paperback)
by LauraFay
I first read this book when I was younger and it terrified me then and it still scares me now. This is one of those books that I recommend to everyone even if you only read it once. Big Brother and the party have their grip tightly on the population and rule through fear and propaganda, Winston Smith is member of the paper but he is just another cog in the wheel carrying out his job in the ministry of truth and trying to survive. But inwardly he rebels again the totalitarian world he lives in and longs to be free, when he and starts a secret love affair with a fellow worker Julia, their actions have long lasting consequences for them both. I thought this book was brilliant but I can’t tell you that I enjoyed reading it as it is a hard book to read and quite frankly it’s terrifying, the events in this book as are so plausible and that’s what makes it terrifying. George Orwell was very much ahead of his time, how many of the things he wrote about have come to pass? Too many to count but one thing that it is true is that this book presents an accurate picture of what life is like now, George Orwell showed a remarkable insight into human nature when he wrote this. The man was a genius and his writing is brilliant.
“The original”
(Paperback)
by Iain McGavin
it’s one of those classics you think you’ve already read (or at least absorbed through cultural references). I’d put it off for years, always meaning to get to it, but I’m so glad I finally did. It’s harrowing from start to finish. Written in the late 1940s, yet you could swear it was penned yesterday. The way “truth” is malleable, history rewritten on demand, constant monitoring, slogans that twist reality—it all resonates uncomfortably with today’s world of misinformation, the social media abyss, and power that demands absolute loyalty. If you’ve been meaning to read it, do it. It’s not an easy or comforting book, but it’s an essential one. It makes you question everything: what you see, what you’re told, even what you think. Five stars, no question.
