“A love story with a bite”
(Hardback)
by SuzyCO
Zoe and Jack will have you thinking about them long after you finish this brilliant debut. The characters are really REALLY relatable. I found myself immersed in the story so much that I forgot I was reading. I’d get home from work with that lovely feeling when you know you’ve got another world to dive in to. I will be looking forward to the next book by this very talented writer.
“A cautionary tale for our time”
(Hardback)
by Jo-anne Atkinson
Zoe is the rather neglected intelligent daughter of a physics professor. She chooses to study chemistry at Harvard where she meets Jack. The attraction is instant but more importantly Jack gives Zoe an entry into cutting edge research. Together they start to research a genetic cause of ageing and this quickly becomes a start-up called Manna. As money starts to flow, Zoe moves further from the lab and is unaware of the direction the research is going in. There's no doubt that this novel pulls strongly from several stories of start-ups in the medical field however it is a little more than these. For about the first two thirds of the book it reads as a perfectly enjoyable tale of two young people caught up in an exciting prospect. However, after the fall, the book focuses more on Jack than Zoe and it becomes more emotional. Overall I really enjoyed the cautionary tale for our time!
“Heartbreakingly Beautiful”
(Hardback)
by Liv F. from Newcastle
This book might just be a contender for favorite read of the year for me. I was enthralled from the moment I started and very quickly I realized this book would break my heart in the most beautiful ways. This book uses a plethora of technical terminology which if you have little to no experience or understanding for the sciences then unfortunately you may struggle or find yourself on Google more than reading, however the subject matter makes it even more intoxicating and truly immerses you in the academic setting that these characters have dedicated themselves to. I could go on and on about this book but I don’t want to give it all away. It will leave your jaw on the floor, your heart broken but patched back together and it will be worth every page. I will leave you with this: GIVE THIS BOOK A TRY! If I could give it a 10/10 I would! Thank you Penguin for the proof!!
“Absolutely compelling - I couldn’t put it down”
(Hardback)
by Maggie at Bracknell
Oh, I loved, loved this book so much. I wasn’t even planning on reading it yet, but just opened the front cover yesterday morning and read the first page and I was immediately hooked and have done NOTHING else all weekend completely immersed in Jack and Zoe’s world. Notes on Infinity is at its heart a story of two young budding scientists who get swept away by the thought of bringing about a powerful new anti-aging drug, set against a backdrop of biotech venture capitalism and its often lax project governance, but it’s also much more than that. It is a commentary on how social mobility often can rely on just a single person to provide a step up, how privilege obtained through parental support, wealth and connections ensures an uneven race, and how meeting your soulmate can sometimes be a genuinely destructive as well as a constructive experience. Both Jack and Zoe are well thought out, relatable and flawed characters, and the multi perspective narrative in the novel cleverly gives us both of their points of view. An immensely strong debut, I predict great things for this novel!
“More wonderful than I could ever have expected!”
(Paperback)
by Victoria at Aviemore
I loved this book! Think of it as if Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow had a will they/won't they romance with Lessons in Chemistry. The chemical jargon never felt overwhelming, and gave me a deep nostalgia for my own lab days working on my own self study experiments. The tension built between Zoe and Jack is electric! I was giddy with excitement one moment and groaning in despair when it, yet again, seemed to lead no where. And that ending: heartbreaking but hopeful! I am still wondering why it took me so long to read this one. I always knew I would love it, but I didn't realise just how much!
