“Notes on Nursing”

This is an interesting insight into the standards and requirements of nursing in the mid 1800's, the basic principles of which still hold true today as the importance of good management and delegation are highlighted time and again to ensure continued and consistent care of the patient. While many of the details may be out of date or since proven to be inappropriate the idea that medical care should address both body and mind is one that still holds true today, as does the need to ensure that the patient is given every opportunity to help themselves rather than relying on everyone else. This was a surprisingly easy read given the time it was written and even as a non-medical professional I was able to understand the issues raised and the reasons behind her suggestions. A very interesting and insight read from the figurehead of nursing, I would certainly recommend this to those thinking of a career in nursing and maybe even those already in it as a reminder to what their priorities should really be (quite simply the patient, first and foremost).
