Overnight by Dan Richards Book Review 4* Being someone who works shifts and who is definitely more of a night owl than a morning person, I was really interested in reading this book. It took me ages to read the first chapter, ‘Night at the Docks, which was about the workings of Southampton Docks because but I started going down rabbit holes, checking out an essay in LRB by John Lanchester that Dan mentions in the book which then led me to briefly read about the Six Day War and Shell (the oil company). This happened quite a lot during the reading of the book, which made the book even more interesting. Alongside this first chapter, my other favourite chapters were Night Shift about the author’s time in hospital during the Covid pandemic, Night Ferry set on the MV Hjaltland ferry travelling on the Aberdeen-Orkney-Shetland route, Night on the Streets following workers from Simon Community homeless charity in London, Night Mail about the Royal Mail trains of the past and present and Heures Du Man about Le Mans 24hr race. There are also chapters on The Shipping Forecast, bats, babies, and Moomins, so there are a good mix of nighttime subjects covered. I really enjoyed this book although I did take quite a while to read it but, as touched on previously, this was down to me looking up things mentioned in the book which I wanted to find out more about. I give the book 4*
