Reviews: Perfect Kill (16)
“Another Great Read From Helen Fields.”
(Paperback)
Helen Fields books just get better.
It was great to hook up again with DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach again as they work on separate cases which merge while also trying to make sense of their personal relationship. This story flowed at a good pace and there was plenty of action which kept me turning pages.
I would highly recommend this novel, in fact this series.
“A fantastic addition to the series”
(Paperback)
A boy trapped in a container, a woman trapped in a deadly sex ring and a body with its head and organs missing – just another day at work for DI’s Ava Turner and Luc Callanach.
Helen Field’s DI Callanach series is ‘Perfect’ for me. Having read all 5 of the previous books I was excited to read the next instalment and was certainly not disappointed! Perfect Kill (how have we not had this title yet?) has a large, arching plot with many layers which all come together for a high stakes conclusion that I couldn’t put down. The subject matter is dark with human trafficking, organ harvesting, sex rings and even a deadly competitive ‘race’. There are a lot of things explored here but they all linked well and the jumps between France and Scotland worked really seamlessly and never felt forced or confusing. I liked the occasional jump in perspective to Elenuta’s point of view and felt her character was really well-rounded and easy to sympathise for.
Having read the other books there is also a lot of character development in these books of the well-crafted characters of Ava, Luc and Natasha which is certainly appreciated – however, I do think if it’s your first read of this series you wont feel like you are missing too much as the standalone parts of the plot are so interesting. The end of the book also sets up a really interesting dynamic for future books as well that I will be on the lookout for with anticipation.
On another note I also really enjoyed the Christmas dinner analogy about how a novel is produced and everyone comes together to get it published in the author acknowledgements!
Overall I really loved Perfect Kill – a worthy addition to a fantastic series and I’m looking forward to the next one already! Thank you to NetGalley & Avon Books UK for the chance to read the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
“Quite possibly the Perfect Crime Novel”
(Paperback)
I love the 'Perfect' series of books by Helen Fields. They're books that I jump at reading. I don't care what they're about, I just know I want to read them. Perfect Kill is book six and it's one of the best in the series, if not the best, in my opinion. If you've read my reviews of the previous books in the series you'll know I also have a teeny (huge) crush on DI Luc Callanach, who actually seems to be pretty much perfect in every way.
After the events of book five, Callanach is in France working for Interpol, whilst DCI Ava Turner is still working in Scotland. However, their cases collide when a dead man is found in France who seems to be linked to a case Ava is working on. This book is an incredibly exciting read with two storylines that had me absolutely on the edge of my seat at times. My heart was in my mouth as each incredibly well-plotted strand came to a conclusion.
The book covers human trafficking and organ harvesting and it seems wrong to say I enjoyed it but I certainly found it utterly compelling and difficult to put down. I was also moved by the horrendous nature of the events I was reading about, although there were one or two smiles too, mostly at the expense of DS Lively, a valued member of Turner's team, but often the butt of jokes.
Callanach and Turner have a very complicated relationship. I love this pair and all their foibles. I feel almost like I know them. I've been through so many ups and downs with them throughout the course of the series. The author's next book is a standalone story so I'm hoping it's not the last we see of these characters but if it is then it's been a pleasure to share their stories with them.
Helen Fields is a versatile and talented author and Perfect Kill is quite possibly the Perfect Crime Novel. It's heart-stoppingly good and completely exhilarating. What a ride!
“A Magnificent Instalment!”
(Paperback)
Remarkably, this is the my first book in this series, which I have intended to begin reading for eons, but have now made inroads with it. I had absolutely no problems diving in at book six, though I imagine, in common with many series, it is recommended to read the instalments in chronological order to gain the full reading experience.
In Perfect Kill by Helen Sarah Fields, I was introduced to the star of the show, DI Luc Callanach. Bart Campbell has been drugged and kidnapped, then locked inside a shipping container far from his Edinburgh home. He knows that his chances of being found alive are slim, but he is unaware that he’s now heading for France where his unspeakable fate is already sealed…
DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are working on separate investigations that soon converge as it becomes clear that the men and women being shipped to France are being traded for women trafficked into Scotland. With so many lives at stake, they face an impossible task – but there’s no room for failure when Bart and so many others will soon be dead…
With a captivating opening scenario, I was engrossed and addicted within the first few pages. Perfect Kill has plenty of violence, gore and action to keep the staunchest of crime readers entertained and has an abundance of subject matters ensure the content is compelling and original. This is a very gritty thriller with graphic themes of sex trafficking that would not suit those who prefer their crime cosy.
I liked the equilibrium between the professional and personal lives of Ava and Luc and their relationship, which came across as pretty complex, along with a checkered history. With its fascinating characters, fabulous plots, and interesting settings, I read Perfect Kill in its entirety in one sitting. Helen Fields' writing is first-class and the satisfying and fulfilling conclusion left me eager for the 7th instalment. Perfect Kill was a five star read for me, and without a doubt I will be looking out for a copy of Perfect Remains, the first book in this superbly written police procedural series.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel from Avon Books via NetGalley at my request, and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
“3.5 stars rounded up tom4”
(Paperback)
DI Callanach is set between Edinburgh and Paris and covers two cases that are somehow linked. A young man is kidnapped in Edinburgh but he is reported aa a missing person. DCI Ava Turner is working on the case. DI Luc Callanach now works in France helping Interpol. The investigation in France is around illegal organ transplants. Ava is also investigating a murder.
Once again I did not know thst this book was part of a series when I requested it. It dark and gruesome in places. The characters were believable. There are some funny but also some upsetting scenes. I do feel I have missed out on a lot of background story by not having read the rest of the book s in this series. I did enjoy this story.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author Helen Fields for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
