Reviews: Perthshire (1)
“From the Carpathians to Lake Titicaca”
(Paperback)
by Nicholas Casley
This 2007 publication features photographs of Perthshire by Allan Wright allied with text supplied by Felicity Martin. Wright’s one-page preface acknowledges the sheer diversity of the Perthshire landscape: “It is big loch, big tree and big river country and in 15 years of tramping around it has always impressed me and you can be sure that any investment of time and energy spent here will be thoroughly rewarded.” Certainly Wright’s photographs provide testimony to his claims, such as the line of snow fences at Glenshee that remind me of the American mid-west, or the distant Atholl Palace Hotel framed by mountains behind and by wheatfields before. But it’s not just the big things that feature in Wright’s photographs. For instance, I liked the pussy willow framing the shot of riverine Perth and the stepped gable of the cottage at Fortingall. The sequence of photographs follows no logic beyond a general anti-clockwise tour of the county commencing in the south. Kinross is included. There are 120 pictures, one per page, alas with variegated white borders. (I always prefer none.) Each photograph is captioned with a sentence or two by Martin. Whilst all of the photographs here merit a view, for me Wright’s strength lies in landscapes rather than buildings. He certainly succeeds in showing that sheer diversity to which he alluded in his preface: at times, the scenes were reminiscent of places as varied as the Carpathians, Finland, Florida’s swamps, and Lake Titicaca. The book is a perfect introduction for those about to visit, and a welcome souvenir for those who have already been.
