This is another great collection from the Robert Howard foundation press. Pirate Adventures contains stories centred around... well... pirates! The book features the usual mix of full stories, poetry,  drafts of the full stories and fragments pertaining to pirates. There are four full stories. Two are rewrites of stories originally featuring more famous characters.  Those original stories have since been published but at the time Howard wrote these new versions the originals remained unsold. Blades of the Brotherhood was originally a Solomon Kane story entitled the Blue Flame of Vengeance. Swords of the Red Brotherhood began life as a conan story entitled the Black Stranger. The originals are excellent but these new versions are still great reads as the stories are very good and the changes are done well.  The remaining two stories, Isle of Pirate's Doom and Black Vulmea's Vengeance are also very good.    Howard is an author I have loved for years and the chance to read material I haven't read before is a joy. Howard was born in Texas 1906 and died in 1936. He was, naturally, a product of his time and place so be aware of word use and attitudes of the time (obviously!) Howard wrote copiously and left behind a trove of complete stories, poems, partially complete stories, synopses and in some cases fragments which are all that remains of stories and poems. The REH foundation press releases aim to, in conjunction with the del rey collections, offer a complete as can be collection of his works. A highly recommended author.
