Reviews: Pyramids (5)
“Camels?”
(Hardback)
Ancient Egyptian myth meets the Discworld? What’s not to love!
The writing is excellent in this novel, his stride has been hit and he is starting to play with language in the wonderful way he does.
It’s all good: from the greatest mathematician in the world to the scheming priests.
Very enjoyable.
“Still good”
(Paperback)
This book has four separate stories this is very good read!
“Foul Tempered, Underestimated Camels”
(Hardback)
The beginning of "Pyramids" led me to believe I was in for a very different story than the one that it turns out to be! It seems like you're in for a plot about assassin's and sneaky murders all in glorious Pratchett style, but the rug is quickly and firmly pulled out from under our feet and we are suddenly plonked slap bang into a tale of old gods and Egyptian style Pharaohs. Pteppic must continue his family's legacy and rule over their rather small and pyramid crowded kingdom that no one has really heard of, never mind whether he actually WANTS to or not... It is one of the slightly more scattered stories from Discworld, but still immensely enjoyable. It's worth a read even to just be introduced to the most hilariously foul tempered and underestimated camels in the literary world.
“Good”
(Paperback)
I came to the discworld series through my brother who recommended it after reading the first four books. When I read the colour of magic book 5 had just been released. I loved the books when I read them. Over the coming years I read each book and enjoyed them but unfortunately I started to waver with pratchett's writing. The books at first and for some time after, were very good stories and very funny. But I started to find that they became either a brilliant story but not funny or extremely funny with a weak plot. So after book 25, the truth I stopped reading pratchett. I do have very fond memories of the books though. None were terrible, most were brilliant I just fell out with them.
The discworld series is packed with invention and humour. Characters leap off the page from rincewind, to the guards of Ankh-morpork, the witches to death, who is my absolute favourite character. The rating will give my feelings for each book. I still recommend pratchett to others despite my stopping reading him. The books are good and one day I may consider returning to them, time and money permitting.
“Not my favourite”
(Paperback)
This wasn't one of my favourite Discworld books. It was funny in parts but the plot generally was a little hard to follow.
