Reviews: Radically Reframing Climate Change (1)
“It isn't about the science...”
(Hardback)
by Yvonne Strong
This book is a very valuable addition to the available information on climate change denial. The author correctly points out that the issue has very little to do with the science of global warming, other than to try to discredit scientists as an authority on the subject. The real issue behind climate change denial in its various forms is ideological, not technical, and has become one of the criteria by which people define their political identity. This means that arguments based on the science are bound to fail, yet that's so often what we all end up arguing about. Will Hackman has some useful suggestions about successfully engaging with climate change denial, Since it's largely a political issue, it needs political responses, especially from the younger generation who will be the major victims of climate change as conditions continue to get worse. He encourages people to become politically active in whatever ways and at whatever levels they feel comfortable with and gives some specific suggestions on how to go about it (as well as what not to do). The book is extensively footnoted with references for anyone interested in delving into the topics in more detail.
