“A Day with Dalloway”
(Paperback)
Mrs Dalloway came to me with sky-high expectations. There were extracts and passages which I loved, which captured my eye and ear and mind and made me think "Yes! - That's exactly what life is like!" However I didn't love it or come away from it in awe - which was what I was expecting.
I definitely think this is a book that would sink deeper into you upon a re-read - so I will revisit at some point in the future. I feel like Clarissa demands your undivided attention.
The overwhelming sense I felt while reading, was that of being a mote of dust floating through London, drifting in an around people's actions and thoughts and invisibly connecting them all through some omnipresent perspective. That aspect I loved! So, Mrs Dalloway, perhaps another day I'll fall under your charming spell.
"that since our apparitions, the part of us which appears, are so momentary compared with the other, the unseen part of us, which spreads wide, the unseen might survive, be recovered somehow attached to this person or that, or even haunting certain places, after death...perhaps--perhaps."
" But the truth is (let her ignore it) that human beings have neither kindness, nor faith, nor charity beyond what serves to increase the pleasure of the moment."
“Interesting but a difficult style”
(Paperback)
The book was very interesting. It addresses in a subtle way issues with the society and the position of a woman in that society. I found the style a bit difficult at times. I’m not a native English speaker, so this must have played a role. It’s not a light reading - that’s for sure!
