Reviews: Remember My Name (46)
“Another Great Book by Sam Blake”
(Paperback)
by Emily Chapman
Remember My Name is the second book I've read by Same Blake and I absolutely loved it. I really enjoyed The Dark Room so was really excited to hear about the second. It kept me guessing to the end. I couldn't put it down and can't wait to read more. The Howards are a very wealthy family who own a large and rapidly expanding multinational company. But their lives are not as perfect as they seem to the outside world. As the story begins, Cressida has just overheard part of an incriminating conversation which confirms her growing suspicions that Laurence is having an affair. Cressida needs as much evidence and information as possible, but can't risk her influential husband hearing about what she is doing, so seeks help from her friend's sister, skilled tech expert Brioni. But Laurence's dishonesty spreads further than his marriage, and with so much at stake, soon the business empire is also under threat. The interwoven stories reveal many twists, right to the last page. I especially liked the strong female characters and the premise and actions felt realistic and believable. Definitely worth a read and I'm looking forward to more from this author
“Worth reading…..”
(Paperback)
by A Mother’s Musings
“Remember My Name” is writer Sam Blake’s latest novel. Author of the Cathy Connolly Garda series and several standalone novels, she writes interesting and entertaining stories, that vary in theme. - If she’d turned off her phone, instead of listening in, perhaps no one would have died…..- “When Cressida Howard catches her entrepreneur husband playing away from home, she hires security expert Brioni O’Brien to get the evidence she needs for a speedy and financially rewarding divorce. But what Brioni uncovers goes beyond simple infidelity. Because Laurence Howard is also in bed with some very dangerous people.” Told from the perspective voices of Cressida and Brioni with the odd chapter from Emily Jane (Cressida’s seventeen year old daughter), I enjoyed how the chapters interlinked and followed on seamlessly. This allowed the reader to see what was happening from the very different characters points of view; as Brioni uncovered blackmail and deceit, Cressida as she continued to suspect her husband of foul play and Emily Jane as she tries to ensnare a possible online predator called ‘Danny Boy’. As the story progresses, there are various twists, turns and red herrings and the denouement, although without doubt unrealistic, was entertaining. Emily Jane was my favourite character and a one I could see forming a series of her own in the future as she grows older. I loved the sisterly relationship Cressida and Brioni developed, all the female characters dominated the story and overall was a satisfactory read. I can recommend “Remember My Name”, it’s a decent modern mystery and well worth reading. #RememberMyName - 3.5 stars
“Intriguing”
(Paperback)
by Sarah Goldthorpe
This is an intriguing read about Cressida, the wife of an millionaire businessman who engages Brioni, the tech whizz sister of a friend, to discretely investigate her husband who she suspects of being unfaithful but who find themselves caught up in a web of attempted murder, blackmail and more. This is the first Sam Blake book I’ve read and although I realised I was missing Brioni’s sisters backstory it didn’t affect the plot of this but it’s possibly worth reading her previous book first. The plot was sharp with some complicated characters and the pace was good, plenty happening but at a rate you could keep up with. There were several stories going on here but they linked well together and the situation with Brioni’s friend didn’t feel as unlikely as it would have done if the plot wasn’t as solid as it was. There’s plenty twists and it definitely keeps you on your toes and the final secret actually put a smile on my face.
“Loved”
(Paperback)
by Jordan Tuxford
Thank you to Readers First and Atlantic Books for an early copy of this. This book ended up being so much more than I'd expected, I went in expecting a typical thriller-esque book and that was no where close to what I got! I guessed a few of the minor twists, which didn't detract from my enjoyment as I get such a sense of achievement when I guess what happens, however, there were other twists which blew me away and I hadn't seen coming. Some of the characters, such as Cressida, took some adjustment to get used to and like but she grew on me. Brioni and Alex were my favourites and I loved anytime they were in a scene. My only real issue was how a certain character, in my opinion, didn't get any real repercussions for their actions, there was some but I didn't feel like it was enough based on everything they'd done. Once I got to the 200 page mark, things took a wild turn and everything ramped up so I didn't want to put it down needing to know what was happening next. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and I'm excited to pick up any other works by the author.
“An enjoyable thriller”
(Paperback)
by Stephanie Whyte
This is the first book by Sam Blake that I have read, but it won't be the last. I found this Irish set thriller a very enjoyable read. Cressida hears her husband speaking to a mystery women at the end of a phone call when he thinks she has hung up. Brioni, the sister of a friend of Cressida's becomes involved to help Cressida uncover who the mystery lady is. What follows is a story with twists and turns reaching far beyond the initial mystery lady storyline. The resulting story is one that kept me guessing and I didn't mange to work out all the twists before they happened. One negative I have is that I would have loved to see the storyline involving Cressida's daughter Emily-Jane fleshed out a bit more. I won't reveal what the storyline is but it is hinted at the beginning of the book and does have a major role to play at the end of the book. Overall it is a book I would recommend to thriller fans.
