Reviews: Robert Ludlum's™ the Bourne Evolution (1)
“Further action by Jason Bourne”
(Hardback)
The character of Jason Bourne was first evolved by Robert Ludlum. Bourne was a member of Treadstone: the agency that created him and trained him as an action figure described as the perfect assassin. With Mr Ludlum's unfortunate passing away Brian Freeman was selected as the author best able to continue with the series and this novel is written by him.
The story begins when Bourne's love known as "Nova" a fellow agent is killed during a mass shooting in Las Vegas. Although many others are killed by the apparent random shooting Bourne is convinced that there is more to Nova's death than there appears to be. He believes that Treadstone was behind Nova's killing and goes rogue to find her killer. On the other side when a congresswoman is killed while speaking in New York Treadstone blames Bourne and orders his death. Jason is at that point working to take down the group calling itself Medusa. He was hired for this by a tech organization and continues with that assignment while trying to avoid Treadstone. This chore is made more difficult when the Tech organization also begins to believe that Jason killed the Congresswoman and joins the hunt for him.
Spicing up the story Bourne gets the aide of a journalist: Abbey Laurent who is a beautiful young woman and supplies a love interest for Bourne while she looks for a story about the murder of the Congresswoman. Abbey ends up helping him out while falling in love with him. The action is fast and events unfold at lightening speed. It would seem to be too fast, but it must be remembered that Bourne was created and molded into the image of a perfect hunter and killer. He is pressured by both the tech group that currently hired him and Treadstone his creators but due to his background is able to handle the things thrown at him while continuing to track down Medusa.
The novel is a fast read, an all nighter and keeps it's readers fully immersed in the constant action that was apparently the original aim of Robert Ludlum in creating the character. The ending definitely points Jason in the direction of more action in the near future. The future novels will supply the same fast action, the almost super reactions of Bourne and his ability to come down hard on enemies of his country and a story that guarantees an all night attraction for his readers.
