Reviews: Sanditon (3)
“Jane Austen fan”
(Paperback)
Having read all of Jane Austen's works during my university years I have always been a fan, but for some reason I never read Lady Susan / The Watsons / Sanditon so that was a beautiful way to spend yesterday in lockdown. My fav is Emma.
“Pure joy!”
(Paperback)
Jane Austen's unfinished piece of work 'Sanditon' is full of unforgettable characters all set at a newly established seaside resort. Told with Austen's uncanny voice of wit and social observation, 'Sanditon' is on par with her earlier pieces of work such as 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Sense and Sensibility'.
I adore Jane Austen and have read all of her novels over and over again and 'Sanditon' did not disappoint. Albeit short, Austen's characterisation is sublime and I look forward to watching the rest of ITV's adaptation.
“Unbearably disappointing”
(Hardback)
Unfortunately I saw the TV adaptation before reading this. I knew Austen died before she finished it, but the 10+ chapters in this edition merely introduce the main characters and their foibles. Indeed the hero, Sydney Parker, is met on the road on his way to Sanditon, having yet to arrive, when the book suddenly ends. I had hoped for some storyline. I don't recommend this edition - it is a bitter disappointment - but if you're after something pretty for your shelf, the cloth cover is rather marvellous.
