“Honestly, one of my favourite books ever!”
(Paperback)

Matson introduces us to the Grant family, who have a busy weekend ahead of them. There's: Eleanor & Jeff (the parents), Charlie, Danny, J.J, Mike, Linnie and her fiancé, Rodney. Linnie and Rodney are due to get married on Saturday, but after their wedding planner flees down since she's been caught for embezzlement, things don't run as smoothly as they should. Bill and Will come to the rescue, from 'Where There's a Will', to get the right decorations, an officiant, a suit, electricity and some, surprisingly delicious, supermarket wedding cake. Despite it being, supposedly, the happiest day of her sister's life, Charlie discovers some cruel home-truths about her 'perfect' family, and that it's not so perfect after all. This is one of my favourite books of all time! Unlike other YA authors, Matson's writing has so much depth and I soon became invested in the characters, along with their own dilemmas and dramas. Underneath the chaos of the wedding, I think Matson delivers a great message about family - every family is dysfunctional, whether it's big or small. In so many books, TV shows, films, in the end everything is solved and the family is all back together, but that's not the case here. Matson shows that being a family isn't necessarily all being together in one room, while it may be nice to dream of, it's not the reality. Family is about knowing someone's always got your back, knowing that you've got someone to count on, someone to talk to, even if they are half way across the country. I think this is a great read for teenagers across the globe, and a subtle reminder to live in the present.
“Amazing book!”

I loved this book so much! The writing was amazing. I loved the way that the scenes with lots of characters were written. It was as if I was right there. Some scenes had the whole family, plus an outsider like a taxi driver or a wedding planner. The main characters would be discussing something and someone else would chime in with a comment, but the family would continue speaking without missing a beat in the scene. Multiple conversations could be going on at once. It was like a real family conversation. I also loved the way that the comic strip was part of the family too. It was a lot like the comic strip For Better or For Worse, where the family grew up as the comic progressed. In this story, their mother created the comic called Grant Central Station, based on the Grant family. But this caused many problems when she reflected their lives too closely. The wedding chaos was crazy, but still realistic. I can imagine these problems happening (hopefully not at one single wedding) and most of them stemmed from the problems with the wedding planner. This story really kept me on the edge of my seat, and made me laugh out loud many times! This was my first Morgan Matson book, but it won't be my last! I received a copy of this book from the publisher on NetGalley.
“Perfect summer read.”
(Paperback)

Well this was cute as hell. Save the Date is my second Morgan Matson book and it was (almost) exactly what I expected! A cute summer-y contemporary book. In this book we follow Charlie, the youngest sibling of the Grant family over the course of three days (yes, the story takes place only over three days). During this weekend, Charlie's sister is getting married which reunites the whole family together and generates a lot of drama and surprises. I absolutely loved the Grant family and the dynamic between the siblings - one of the best parts of the story according to me. I also really enjoyed the simple writing that makes Matson's books so easy and fast to read. However, I have to admit that I didn't quite manage to connect to this book as much as I did with Since You've Been Gone. Something was missing for me to really connect with the characters and to give it a higher rating than this. Also, our MC Charlie could be quite annoying at times because of her reaction to things that didn't go her way. I still really enjoyed reading Save the Date but was expecting just a tad bit more.
