“Strategic Brilliance with Brilliant Gameplay”
(Game)
If you played Risk, Catan and Ticket to Ride, Scythe is definitely your next step. Blending a few different types of game, it creates a unique experience each time.
In Scythe, players work towards completing six objectives and ending the game with the most money. On your turn, you’ll pick one of the four available actions on your faction board, completing both the top (moving units, gaining resources and reputation etc) and bottom (building structures, recruiting and upgrading your faction board) action if able. All players have access to all of these actions, but the boards are slightly different mixing and matching different ones for different players giving you greater replayability in every single game. Forward planning is key in building towards some objectives early and will help bring endgame rewards quickly. If you unlock all of your recruits early doors the actions of your players to the left and right will gain you a lot of resources, or you could build out all of your mechs and start a couple of fights to win some objectives. Send your leader around the board, picking you up encounter tokens to get a huge bonuses or make a break for the factory to try and get the best factory cards giving you an extra option on your turns. With 12 objectives to meet, you can pick and choose what you want to go for playing the game completely peacefully or being an absolute warmonger. At the end of the game, you gain bonus coins based on three endgame conditions (objectives complete, most controlled spaces, and spare resources) and your total popularity, then the player with the most money is the winner.
Scythe is genuinely one of the best games I’ve ever played and I’ve come back to many many times. It has quite a few expansions with new factions, airships and all sorts of different ways to play. If you get this and love it, I can fully recommend picking up the Rise of Fenris expansion which introduces a campaign which has tonnes of new content that it would be a spoiler to tell you about.
So if you are looking for something a little more in-depth you can do no wrong picking this game up!
