In Selfie, Will Storr looks to explore self obsession in the modern world and does so in an extremely well researched and clearly written way. His approach is empathetic and thoughtful but also doesn't pull any punches when discussing the problems faced by us all today in a world swamped with social media and narcissism. I found a lot of fresh ideas in these pages and liked his stoic approach to the subject. It's entertaining throughout, fun at times but overall, very touching as the author uses his own life experiences as well as those of his subjects to discuss the topic. I'm really looking forward to exploring more of Stoor's writing.

Will Storr sets himself a formidable task; to understand why it is that the Western world has become so self-obsessed, and with it, so anxious. Starting in Ancient Greece, he traces the rise of a culture of individualism, which evolves, unfolds and manifests in many forms until the present day; where many feel encouraged to attain unreachable levels of perfection. Visiting addicts, professors, and cults along the way, Storr explores where our ideals have come from, and the effect that their pursuit has on people. The result is a well researched, insightful and brilliantly entertaining read. Perfect for fans of Jon Ronson.
