“Review: '"September": A History Painting by Gerhard Richter' by Robert Storr with a foreword by Brian Urquhart”

A space in frozen time where real art meets real life: this is 'September' the painting which captures on the canvas one series of moments nobody will ever forget. In this book by Robert Storr, the world famous painter Gerhard Richter yields up his work that pictured in terrible truth just one of the events of 2001. Storr's clear but critical prose guides readers through that morning, and on into the afternoon and afterwards. That day unfolds, conversations are recorded or remembered, the amateur on-site photographs are on the pages and gradually Richter's painting begins to emerge, piece by piece by piece. Close up at first, the application of paint on surface mirrors to a certain extent the individual people and seconds of the day. Richter himself appears only in the final pages - a maestro suddenly revealed. Fans will read it anyway but whether the ordinary people whose lives were so badly affected or who vanished during these acts of terrorism is debatable. Only a few hours: many more minutes and seconds. Are all encapsulated in this example of supreme artistry? The authors investigates. We follow, breathless almost. It is a short read and we can at times be grateful for its respectful brevity, in the face of evil. Storr tries to do the painting justice, situating the work in its place and precise time. Does he succeed? It is just impossible to say. Thank you for a thought provoking book. And for images of the painting too. Lynne Charoenkitsuksun, MA, BA(Hons), TEFL Dip
