“Dark and thrilling”
(Hardback)
by K. Bickmore
There are two sides to the internet and the connections made there. You can find your people there, or release your inner evil all while remaining anonymous. And this book hits both the joys and the horrors of that in a story that kept me hooked from the beginning to the end! At first you have the goodness, with Krista and her friend, Hailey, creating a a safe place on Twitch where real person advice is given and anyone can ask a question, whether it is about current relationships, or family situations and get the wisdom and encouragement from so many helpful sources. That was such a sweet and good idea, unfortunately the internet creates trolls and worse and well, this wouldn't be a thriller without a threat. Anonymity makes everything so much scarier! Plus other odd things happening which may or may not be in Krista's head. I will say, I did kinda get annoyed with how Krista always felt guilty about things that were not in her control, what with Chase547 claiming things that may or may not be true, and no way to prove anything about it. And how she blamed her friend too. But the rest of the story was great and thank goodness for understanding family and cops. I also loved how the Twitch streams/chats got added in which really added to the realness factor. I think the scariest thing about this book is that it is totally plausible and really could and does happen, at least the anonymous trolling which can ruin lives, especially for those who rely so heavily on social media! A sad fact of life and it will only get worse. So, I really had a blast reading this book, and a few nightmares and I am so happy to add this to my collection of books by Sara Driscoll and I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next!
“Who knew online presence could be dangerous?”

Shadow Play by Sara Driscoll ~ Podcasts. live streaming, amateur advice dispensed in real time for all to see ~ Who knew that a side job could provide satisfaction that might lead to murder ~ What I liked: * Learning a bit more about the online terminology and workings of those who have online accounts for gaming, streaming, podcasts, and such * Krista: physical therapist, businesswoman, good friend, loving daughter and sister, lost her fiancé Linc a couple of years previous to the story, counsels patients during sessions, strong, survivor * Zach: Krista’s older brother, protective, available to assist when needed, seems like a good person * Krista’s parents who are there for one another and for their children * Officer Doug Green and Detective Simon Miller: attentive to Krista’s concerns, dedicated to their job, attentive, people I would want on my case if I needed a police person * Hailey: Krista’s friend, tech savvy, partner on the podcast, had secrets * The moderators working with Krista & Hailey * The Physical Therapy potions of the story that reminded me of my nursing past * Thinking about what the community for Word for the Wise might have been like and how hard being a moderator would be for such a large group * That I had a good idea who the killer was early on * The way the killer was eventually captured and knowing he would be put away for a LONG time * Thinking about what Krista’s future might hold in store for her What I didn’t like: * The harm done by a person who killed at least two innocent people * Thinking about what would make someone into a killer * That this book will appeal more to people who can relate to the gaming-streaming-etc more than I did – this was hard for me to sink my teeth into though I have loved all of the other book I have read by Sara Driscoll aka Jen J. Danna Did I like this book? Yes Would I read more by this author? Yes Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review. 3-4 Stars
