Reviews: Siblings (3)
“Absolutely cracking”
(Paperback)
This is exactly the kind of book I like - short, translated fiction that I can dive into and read in a day. Siblings was fraught, tense, full of razor-sharp prose in the grey setting of a divided Germany; yet in the greyness are vivid flashes of colour and hope and thought. I loved Elisabeth’s character and her relationships with those around her.
Really brilliant discovery, I can’t wait to read more by Reimann. Thanks Penguin for the review copy!
“Transporting”
(Paperback)
Fulfils an important function of literature, allowing us to empathize with people we know nothing of. This voice comes across Europe and across the years from the German Democratic Republic. I can't remember the last time I encountered a character who lived under communism and was enthusiastic for it, but not portrayed as a fanatic. Here she is, in this fascinating, transporting novella about the ideological distances between sibling humans and countries.
“Fascinating”
(Paperback)
A brilliant insight into a divided Germany, and a perfect introduction to Brigitte Reimann, cult author and incredible personality. Short, thoughtful and punchy, definitely worth a read!
