Reviews: Spare Brides (2)
“Very thought provoking”
(Paperback)
by Chrys - Plymouth
I'm not normally a fan of historical romances BUT I do really enjoy reading Adele Parks' work so when I was given the opportunity to read this title I jumped at it and I was pleasantly surprised. So much has changed in our world in just 100 years and yet some things stay the same - falling in love being one of them. It is an uncontrollable force of nature and that is shown particularly well in this novel. Four very different women deal with the aftermath of WW1 and try to find happiness and love. A lovely read and I will be recommending it to people.
“Behind the glamour”
(Paperback)
by Emma Smith at Bedford
Set in1920's, this is the story of four friends: Lydia, Sarah, Beatrice and Eva. All different women with different lives but all with one thing in common, they are all trying to find their place in a new post-war world. Then Edgar Trent comes along and turning friendships and lives upside down. I love anything set in this era. Adele Parks' descriptions of the clothing and jewellery, houses and glam parties were perfect. Exactly how I envision upper class life in the 1920's to be – you can almost hear the rustle of beaded dresses and the clink of cocktail glasses! But this novel isn't just about parties, it has a very real message and story to tell of the difficulties faced by a generation of people following World War One. Not only those who fought, but those who were left at home – everyone had to adapt to new lives after such destruction. And everyone had their own struggles. I couldn't put this down – I did find myself just rushing to the end to find out what happens. The story is full of frustrating missed opportunities, hidden emotions and interesting relationships. It's a perfect read for anyone who loves books set in the 20's and enjoys a really good story! I'm also quite excited about the prospect of a follow-on novel featuring the characters in their pre-War lives!
