I enjoyed a lot of elements in it, like the teaching and understanding the magic as it is explained to the students, the forming of the relationships between the MCs and learning how kids (& adults) that come from mixed types of families (sirens & witches...etc.) are impacted by the structure of the magic. I think the main issue is that we don't really dive into a lot of the different elements presented in here and this is more of a story of saving a magical school and changing it from it's old ways to it's new ways. I think I would have loved to learn more about how being a siren defined MC's experience, what she gathered from her years there and while we do get to see some of what happened, we definitely need a lot more depth into Luna's background and how everything came to be as it is. I did enjoy getting to see MC's struggling with something for the first time and how strange it is to her that she isn't automatically good at something. This was very relatable for a lot of us ND people who are labelled as gifted and suddenly struggle when life, reality and burnout hit. It was also nice to read about the exploration of finding a career that fits who you are rather than settling for something just because you started it. All in all, this was a good book but could have used a bit more refinement and sharpening to deliver the message and bring more depth into the MCs themselves rather than the magic, the school and the community Thank you to the Author, Publisher and Netgalley for the eArc in exchange for my honest opinion

This had a great premise and I enjoyed the exploration of a new magical world but it did lag a wee bit in places. This is a cosy feel but spicy sapphic romance, where there are different schools for different types of magic. Bryn is from a Siren family but as a witch she had to attend Grimoire Academy rather than the Siren school.  Whilst there she has an intense crush on a slightly older girl and  has an unfortunate run in with some mean girls, who make her life a misery. As the beneficiary of her favourite teacher's will, Bryn, now an accomplished spell caster and author, returns to the school to sort out her inheritance. Amelia, now the headmistress, asks for Bryn's help with teaching at the school and Bryn decides this might be the challenge she was looking for. I really enjoyed the romance storyline and the set up was good.  There were a few cringey bits of dialogue but that could just be me - there are some words that just give me the ick!  I did struggle with some of the other plot points - Amelia as headmistress at 24!! I mean I know a lot of it might go on magic levels but I did struggle with that. The will they won't they between Bryn and Amelia was quite good, especially mixing in the professional side of their relationship too.  Whilst some may see the relationship as developing quickly, they did have that initial time together as students so they weren't strangers as such to each other. Many individuals in the cast of characters fell under the LGBTQIA umbrella and I loved seeing more representation. The themes of being an outsider, not fitting in and anxiety were woven in quite well too. The miscommunication trope is not my favourite and I really struggled with that part of the storyline - I kept wanting to shout "talk to her dammit".
