I just loved this book from the moment I started reading it. It made me laugh out loud, but it was also moving and warm. For fans of David Nicholls - you'll love this.

“Origami!”
(Paperback)
by Nicola Vanderwert
This is a wonderful comic novel. It’s a bittersweet story with central questions about love, marriage and how we choose our life partners. It throws humour onto the unfunny parts of life. Utterly engaging, often touching and you might even try origami after reading.
“Magnificent, touching and funny”
(Paperback)

Praising a novel to the skies can be off-putting for some subsequent contrarian readers, so I'll start with the caveat that some of the humour in Heiny's novel can be of the arch variety. It's no surprise that Kate Atkinson's approval is quoted on the cover, since the constant nudge-nudging of Atkinson's narrative style has grated so thoroughly that I'd never willingly read another of her novels. And yet . . . . Firstly, Heiny is much funnier. Secondly, Audra, the standout character, is an unforgettable comic creation. Thirdly, the novel is a poignant and wonderfully observed portrait of a family and a marriage. Fourthly, there is not a single stumble in the quality of the writing, which does just what it needs to do and no more. It's sobering and depressing that a piece of virtue-signalling tosh like Colston Whitehead's The Underground Railroad can win the Pulitzer Prize and garner gushing praise on sites like this one, whereas this is only the second Waterstones review at the time of posting this. If Heiny never writes another word she deserves the everlasting gratitude of readers for this perfect comic novel.
