This is a really gripping page-turner. Some people might object to a story written about a missing child but this was first published in 1981 - long before Madeleine McCann went missing. I heard about it from the Radio 4 programme 'A Good Read' and because they were raving about it, I thought I'd give it a go. It took a few months for Waterstone's to get hold of a copy (appropriate title!) but it was well worth the wait. I couldn't put it down.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this Persephone book, as it was published much later than the other books of theirs that I had enjoyed (first published in 1981 I think?). But once I started this book I literally could not put it down. It tells the story of a child who goes missing while walking to school one morning. This is the main event of the book, and while nothing much happens after but the search, Beth Gutcheon is incredibly good at describing in meticulous detail the emotions of her characters, and the thought processes they go through. Whilst I wouldn't necessarily describe this as a crime novel, it was gripping and unforgettable. I will definitely be seeking out more of Beth Gutcheon's books after reading this one.

This is a stonker of a page turner with real, believable, relatable characters. Just as I was thinking that the last few chapters were like the best build up to a climax in a film, ever. Then I read that Beth Gutcheon had written the screenplay for the film, called Without a Trace. I must track it down. Apart from a fantastic story, if that isn't enough, the book is tactile with its beautiful loose cover and tasteful design. This will not end up in the charity shop, no way.
