“A fantastic book”
(Paperback)
I really enjoyed this interesting book about Scotland and its lower league football clubs. It contained interesting history about the towns that the author went to such as Alloa in a former life being famous for its ale making and being ' the Burton on Trent of Scotland'. Shown there is more to Scottish footy than Rangers and Celtic. It has made me want to visit the towns and its football ground mentioned.
“Move Over Nick Hornby Things Just Got Hotter”
(Paperback)
Daniel Gray is rapidly becoming a great writer. Stramsh is earlier in his journey but is nonetheless cracking - anyone who likes football or who has been to a football match will find a resonance in Gray's prose. Read Stramash and then get Saturday 3pm to see how Gray has gone from strength to strength. Masterly!
“Good one for footy fans”
(Paperback)
I enjoyed this book for all sorts of reasons but mainly because I follow a team in the lower leagues and so recognise some of the issues. It's a calm and measured travelogue, with a bit of history thrown in (possibly the most interesting aspect for me), sprinkled with humour and a small amount of self deprecating wit.
It helps that Daniel Gray is from NE England since he has both an outsider's perspective, but is well aware of some of the post industrial hangovers suffered by the towns that he visits.
In short, if you like football spiced with social history, this is well worth a look.
