“The cat was a rainbow in a dark world” — that quote pretty much sums up this stunning true story. Michael, a depressed, drunk homeless man stumbles across a hurt, starving lost cat on a rainy night in Portland. He nurses her back to health and names her Tabor and the pair hitchhike and drift across the American West Coast on an amazing journey. Meanwhile, her heartbroken owner never stops looking for her and the cat's littermate waits for her on the porch every night. It also vividly details modern homelessness. The writing is great and transporting and almost feel like your on the journey with them. Expect lots of emotion and adventure, and a few tears. I was blown away how just how GOOD this book, particularly as it sells itself short with The Street Cat Named Bob comparison (which was a boring, badly written book), so was surprised at just how brilliant it was. It's got to be made into a movie.

This is a beautifully written true story of hope and love and how animals change our lives. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, but compelling and deeply moving. It's truly is the rock ’n' roll cat book, as Shane MacGowan called it — all the chapters are . Strays is On the Road for cats. And it's quite a journey. I absolutely loved it and didn't want it to end.

I was given this as an early Christmas present, started it reading it and couldn't stop. As a guy, I normally wouldn't read anything described as heartwarming, but this story is so inspiring and special. I'd highly recommended for cat lovers or anyone who just appreciates good writing.
