“Further Kindle County developments ”
(Hardback)
by Paul Lane
Mr Turow has become a master of the legal thriller with most of his novels set in Kindle County. The county has become well delineated and certainly appears to be a real area. Bill Ten Boom known as Boom by most of the people that know him has left his job as a prosecutor at the age of fifty. He walks away from a divorce from his wife, Kindle county, his law career, and even his country when he is recruited by the International Criminal Court (ICC) located in the Dutch city of The Hague. The group is charged with prosecuting cases of crimes against humanity and Boom walks right into a situation of mass murder of 400 Roma (Gypsies) occurring 10 years ago during the war in Bosnia. A witness has come forward and testifies that armed men came into the town populated by the Roma, herded them over to a cave and sealed them up, killing them with hand grenades. Boom's job is to investigate Ferko Rincic's (the witness) testimony and determine what really happened. His investigation takes him from travels to villages and towns in Bosnia to secret meetings at the top of the U.S. government in Washington. He meets general Layton Merriwell a disgraced former commander of the American military force in Bosnia, Attilla Doby a retired Sgt Major that seems to have gotten her hands on supplying all and sundry needs in the ex war zones and Esma Czarni the extremely sensual attorney for Ferko. Turow has done an exceptionally concise investigation of a war that has not been well delineated in America. His description of the Roma brings to life a people that have made the name Gypsies synonymous with Nomads. These people do not even maintain an oral history of themselves, but are present in most of Europe and the U.S and targeted with being thieves and kidnappers of children. One of the reasons brought out for the massacre of the 400 Roma is possibly the widespread hatred held by many for them. In the course of his investigations Boom has an affair with Esma, begins to have feelings for a married woman that rents him a room in her home, and comes into contact with Laza Kajevic the former leader of the Bosnian Serbs. A look at an area of Europe,a people not well known and a period of conflict are skillfully brought into a focus that has not generally been looked at since the U.S. withdrew from the area. As an added ingredient the workings of The International Criminal Court and the difficulties encountered by it are aptly presented. A very well done look at a world that was never sharply done .
