The Appendix is a difficult, painful, beautiful read. Konemann shares personal experiences with, and responses to, transphobia. He shows us how normalised transphobia has become in the media and society. From making trans people the butt of jokes, to harrassment and threats of violence, to ultimately, actual murder. It's a difficult read. But a necessary one. Konemann uses this space to educate cis folks of the traumas that trans people are subject to, but also to share his positive experiences: "I've come to like it here, at the intersection of trans and gay. This is where the world feels most vivid to me." He redirects the conversation to joy. For trans and gay readers, he shows that there is beauty to be found in your body and in your community. That there is strength in uplifting those around you. If you get a chance to read this, do. It's hard, but the beauty is worth it.
